Topic: Why would filament "dry up" after long extruder movement?

Here's the bed level test I was printing showing the long movement it made and the result when it started printing after it:

Anyone know what would cause that and if it can be fixed?

Maybe it is retracting too far and not making it back to the nozzle quickly enough.  Try putting something like .5 into Restart Distance after retraction and see if it helps.

Perhaps not extruding as easily as it could, is the filament spool moving easily? Is the extruder skipping at all while feeding?

I haven't seen any signs of a filament feed problem (and I have my ball bearing spool holder now so there is barely any resistance). The retraction setting seems promising, I'll give that a try (and maybe I should print a few more copies just to see if the same thing happens every time).

I did try printing this test a few more times without making any changes, and once the filament "ran out" in a different place, but most of the time it seemed perfect on every square, so I guess that does sound like a filament feed problem. Maybe I just need to tighten the roller a bit (I'm certainly not getting any obvious dust on the drive gear).

Re: Why would filament "dry up" after long extruder movement?

I see this problem from time to time when I run my first layer extrusion width a little too high.  Usually when I get up around 200%. For me it's different between different filament colors.  I think it has to do with heat chamber pressures when I'm pushing out too hard. When I see it, I back off my first layer a little and the problem goes away. Once I get a filament color dialed in, I save it and don't have to mess with it again..  Let me know if it works for ya if you try it
