Topic: Nozzle problem?

Hi all :=)
I just got my Solidoodle v3(pre built) today and I have a problem.
After connecting, install fillment etc i've tried a test run but almost nothing comes out if the nozzle. Temps are ok, and the motors are running around durring print.
Attachment is a picture of how the nozzle looks after a test print.

Can somebody please help to point me in the right direction on how to solve this?

OK, you do have some filament out of the nozzle there. First, can you extrude plastic using manual controls?

Second, have you set the height of the nozzle for the first layer to 0.3mm?

Third, have you leveled your bed?

You really need to calibrate everything before actually trying to print.

1) Not really, if I set the extrcude to 200mm and press 4 times .. around 100mm of plastic get extruded

3) no, i kinda got stuck on the first

You should calibrate the extruder:

That said, I would be surprised if it were that far off.  It sounds more like a partial clog, except that would be unusual for a first print.  Unless you left the hot end at print temperature for a while prior to printing?

Try the calibration and see how that goes.

Looking at the pic I see the filament drive wheel looks to be loaded up with filament stuck in the grooves.... this will cause the stepper and drive wheel to slip and not extrude much... you need to take a small stiff brush and clean the plastic from the wheel, you should also try to push the filament through by hand when the temperature is up to the setting(194C) just unscrew the thumbwheel on the right hand side of the printhead and remove the thumbwheel, washers and spring(note the order they are on for reassembly... also note how far the thumbwheel is screwed onto the screw) now let the arm tilt down to the right then you can proceed to push the filament into the extruder by hand... it should not take very much pressure downwards... also the melted filament should fall straight downward and not be curling if it comes out of the nozzle doing curlycues it is most likely clogged(partially)

Yes, the problem was exactly that ...
I removed the thumbscrew and pressed a new filament back and forth untill the it loaded correctly. Then I adjusted the thumbscrew so it pulls correctly. The thumbscrew "value" was the orginal problem, it was too loose so the filament spinned and made dust.

A tip for you... download this http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:35088 and use it to test different temp printing. I was quite surprised at the difference even 5C made. I now print at least one or two of these with every new filament.

200C on my Solidoodle seems to be a sweet spot for most of the ABS I'm buying.
