Re: Got my new E3D All-Metal Hotend V4 - (Updated with Mounted Pics)

Wow... That makes a big difference!

I assume I just need to install the driver board and double the steps/mm, right?

I have a couple of geared steppers coming I plan to use for a double Bowden setup, but I will try the new driver board first.

Thanks for the help!

Ian, you just became to catalyst for me to order the stepper drivers. Impressive pic!

That photo pushed me over the edge, too. New driver shipped today, looking forward to the weekend upgrade!

Re: Got my new E3D All-Metal Hotend V4 - (Updated with Mounted Pics)

I received my new stepper drivers today and installed them. It definitely made a significant difference... I would say it is exactly twice as good as before! smile

If anyone else is going to try this, please keep in mind that you might need to install a 47k resistor between the sleep and fault pins. When I installed mine into my RAMPS 1.4 board, they didn't function until I did this. Apparently the board was asleep...

It looks like you are overextruding a bit.  If you dial down the flow a little, it may come out even better.  Also I had to tweak the current on mine a little bit.  Turn the extrusion speed down really slow to something like 10, extrude 50mm and listen while you turn the pot.  Turn it all the way down to start, and then turn it up to the point where the motor sounds the smoothest and you can't see any jerking in the motion of the extruder gear.

Downey,  sounds like you got the md2a version from pololu, the md20b version solves that onboard.

For perfect walls, you really need to hand tune vref to get it spot on..

Re: Got my new E3D All-Metal Hotend V4 - (Updated with Mounted Pics)

you are right... I forgot that I had increased the flow rate to try to compensate for the pulsing... after playing with the vref adjustment a little and calibrating the flow rate again (for a single wall thickness of 0.42mm @0.3mm layer thickness) its pretty impressive how much nicer it looks now...

thanks for the help!

Re: Got my new E3D All-Metal Hotend V4 - (Updated with Mounted Pics)

Finaly got my E3D installed and working.

But the Moire is terrible

You can actually see the pulses on the single wall.

The Moire pattern is so bad that it is worse than the z wobble I originally had.  I have ordered the DRV8825 drivers and hope there are here in the next few days.  Other than doubling the steps per mm in the EEPROM is there anything else that has to be done? I hope they solve the problem.

I do like the E3D but to determine if I keep liking it I have to eliminate the moire pattern.

Re: Got my new E3D All-Metal Hotend V4 - (Updated with Mounted Pics)

just back your vref on the standard stepper off a fraction - dont use numbers, just do the same calibration fine tuning thats spoken of for the DRV8825's.. even without 1/32 stepping, fine tuning the e stepper vref makes a huge difference

Re: Got my new E3D All-Metal Hotend V4 - (Updated with Mounted Pics)

Is that just turning the pot down and then up until the motor smooths out?

Yup

Tried it, didn't seem to help.  Hope my drivers are here soon.

What mounting solution have people come up with for using the E3D fan as well as lawsys mk5 fan?

The only thing  I have seen is someone running a fan behind and below the x carriage using the lawsy's ungraded/printed x/y carriages. There is a pic floating around somewhere.

Re: Got my new E3D All-Metal Hotend V4 - (Updated with Mounted Pics)

I haven't been able to find that picture on this post.

I'll probably end up making something if no one has a solution at the moment without lawsy's x/y carriages

Planning to design and release this for a 30mm fan in the next week or so.

Re: Got my new E3D All-Metal Hotend V4 - (Updated with Mounted Pics)

So in Australia do they like to sell fans with odd-numbered dimensions, while in the US it's all even numbered?  I've never seen a 30mm or 50mm fan here, only 20, 40, 60, 80, 120.

Re: Got my new E3D All-Metal Hotend V4 - (Updated with Mounted Pics)

Looker harder.  Jaycar sells 30mm ones, as does altronics smile

195

Re: Got my new E3D All-Metal Hotend V4 - (Updated with Mounted Pics)

Well I'll just say that I am opposed to odd-numbered fans on principle.  Fans with even-numbered dimensions are more precise.

Re: Got my new E3D All-Metal Hotend V4 - (Updated with Mounted Pics)

It's a matter of packing.

There's not much room under the carriage for a big fan.

Last time I released a a fan system with a 30mm fan lots of people complained about it. This time it's the only way.
