Topic: Printing below virtual print bed???

I would like to print this Yoda model (too large to upload), but I don't know the exact change in degrees needed to make his flat bottom completely level with the bed. I was wondering what would happen if I lowered him so part of him was below the bed? Would the printer head bang against the bed, or just print everything that remains above it? In case I can only get it close to level I could just trim it a little in the software?

Re: Printing below virtual print bed???

Most software has a 'drop' button or 'center' button. Both of these will position the object flat on the bed from the lowest point.

Repetier/Slic3r will also override an object beneath the base plane and move it up inline.

The z-endstop will prevent the nozzle from ever smashing through the bed unless it is incorrectly set.

Well that sucks. I was hoping I could trim the bottom as needed. I don't know how to reallign models. Someone else sent me this realigned Yoda that they edited, and it is still not level with the ground. It begs the question why the original model wasn't level, but also that the process of making a model level enough to print must be an arguous process.

Do you have a pic to describe what you mean by not level?

The newer Repetier Host versions have a cut feature that you might be able to use to trim the base flat. I haven't tried it personally, however.

How recent a version are we talking?

The first image is the Yoda as is. I assume at one point someone else must have tried to level it in the file for me by the word "fixed" in the file name, but clearly it wasn't completely rightside up. The second image I played with the orientation a little to try to make it a bit closer, and the last shows that it passes through the bed. How can I reoriented objects perfectly so that their perfectly flat bottom will be right on the bed?

The word "fixed" in the file name means they probably ran the file through Netfabb cloud to make sure it was "watertight".that's fine.

Change the rotation of the X&Y axis to 0 and you should be okay.

Any value other than 0 on the X,Y will tilt the model off of the vertical axis the number of degrees you set it for, leave those at 0.

Any change to the "Z" axis rotation will turn the model on the bed, that is the only one you will ever have use for.

Good luck big_smile

did you see that yoda's chin? do you want to print with support and lose detail?
this model is angled for a reason...

Adendum:

On the first pict with Yoda on his side,I couldn't see the values you had set on the XYZ rotation,so I'm taking a guess here.

If all values were set at 0 and Yoda was still on his side,it's not your fault. It's the person who created the file.

You could try a value of 90 on the X axis which would stand the little bugger up straight and then you could rotate him by setting the Z axis rotation to face him in the direction you desire.

It all sounds complicated but what I described takes about 30secs to do because you do it all before slicing the file.

Remember, the value you set will rotate the object in degrees in the X,Y or Z axis.

Good Luck !!

Re: Printing below virtual print bed???

Changing the orientation, but not the file doesn't do anything. When I push center and drop again it reset thos values which didn't level it anyway. I will take my chances on the overhang with Yoda's chin. Doesn't look too extreme. I had issues recently printing a Mermaid with 0 degree arms hanging out and I wish there was a good way to handle that issue.
