Topic: Has anyone designed an indicator mount for a stock SD3?

I have my SD3 printing but i'm still working through all the calibrations.  I was wondering if anyone has designed an indicator mount for a stock SD3 that can be used for leveling the bed?  If not, is there a mount that connects to the stock SD printer head that can show me how everyone is mounting?  I can use that and design something up myself.  Just looking for a quick fix before i go down the " I'll design something myself" route.
thanks

search thingiverse for "solidoodle dial indicator"

SD3 w/ mods:
Glass bed with QU-BD heat pad upgrade, threadless ballscrew w/ 8mm smooth rod, spectra line belt replacement, lawsy MK5 extruder, Lawsy replacement carriage, E3D hotend, Ramps 1.4 w/ reprap discount controller, DRV8825 drivers, 12v 30A PS, Acrylic case, Overkill Y-idlers, Filament alarm, Extruder fan + more.

http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:28094 works with SD3 and  you can  use this if the dial indicator has a flange on the back  http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:116889

Re: Has anyone designed an indicator mount for a stock SD3?

I had an issue with the one Ian Johnson designed. I think my jigsaw was slightly different than his, so I designed my own.

been happy with it so far.

thanks guys, these look great.  never thought of using magnets.  simplifies things tremendously.

Is there a particular, reasonably priced, Dial Indicator that people are buying?

With my SD3 on it's way I want to be prepared with all the tools etc that I'll be needing.

Re: Has anyone designed an indicator mount for a stock SD3?

I printed downeym excellent designed version, only to find my dial indicator probe cannot reach the bed because I bought a 0-10mm dial indicator instead of the double-the-price 0-25 mm one!

Is there anybody willing to design a version that extends further 15mm down the extruder, and add a fourth magnet mount? I think it will be needed to stay in place with the added length.

Unfortunately I still have to master some 3D design software to do it by myself (which one do you use?)

Re: Has anyone designed an indicator mount for a stock SD3?

I had the same problem and my indicator is a 1" drop dial.  My guess is the digital's are a little longer.  I may have time to design something up today.  The mount did seem to work ok with just the three mounting magnets, so not sure i'll add the fourth.  Having the current stl allows me to cheat and get the hole locations directly from the model, adding the fourth means i have to do some measuring.. i'm just lazy that way..  smile

thank you very much!
Anyway at least I can help you with the measurements, done with 0.01mm digital caliper smile

thanks for the info.  another thing i was thinking about adding was an adjustable or at least clip type stem holder.  My indicator was a little tight going in, and it looks like you wrapped tape around yours.  it should be simple enough to make spring load type hole for the indicator stem.  what are your thoughts?

Re: Has anyone designed an indicator mount for a stock SD3?

maybe i can get the dimensions of Lawsey's MK5 adapter posts and could somehow incorporate those into the design.  That would let it work on the factory extruder head and also the MK5.

this project is already starting to get bigger.. lol

Re: Has anyone designed an indicator mount for a stock SD3?

I happen to have a printed MK5 set and it already includes a dial clip-on accessory, but I'm too scared to replace my stock extruder big_smile

Also, dial indicator mounting diameter is 8 mm

I have all that printed out also.  I'm not going to start installing it until my stock parts break.  I suppose i can use the existing stl file and analyze the post to get the dim's.  I just dont care much for doing that since the stl's tend to degrade the dimensional accuracy of the model.

Oh well, it is plastic were extruding here so i guess accuracy isn't all that important.. smile

Re: Has anyone designed an indicator mount for a stock SD3?

A whole bunch of additional mounts have already been created here.

There should be sketch up files with the amount design there also.

yup.. I've seen all those.  I don't know how to use sketchup, i'm a Catia user so i do my modeling with that.  I guess if i'm gonna be part of the community i need to learn it.

I have the netfab desktop software that i've been using to get dimensions off stuff i've DL'ed from thingverse.  It seems to do well with basic prismatic's, just dont know how close it can get with the shape of the mounting posts.  Might have to do a little trig.. see what i mean.. this project just gets bigger and bigger..

Here ya go.

I put it as a work in progress as i think i may need to beef up the slide clips a little.  Although, once you set it for you indicator, you probably wont need to adjust it again.

At some point i'll make a mount that fits the MK5 accessory posts.
Design input welcome.

Re: Has anyone designed an indicator mount for a stock SD3?

That looks great, however I just noticed it sticks out a long way to account for a ring on the back of the gauge. Do you have a version without that extra depth, or can share the original 3D model so I can modify it to suit my gauge. (I can edit the STL, but it's always nicer to work with the original files)

Awesome! It's even adjustable smile

Gomisan,
The original model is Catia V5.  I can export several formats so tell me what you need.  I can quickly change the center of the stem hole so if you want to give me the dimension and i'll upload an additional slide to thingiverse.  It looks like i can put the center line about 10mm from the mount face and be safe.  I'll make that change now and upload.  Let me know what works for you

Re: Has anyone designed an indicator mount for a stock SD3?

I use Rhino 3D, it's default file format is .3DM

The gauge I have has a stem that's 8mm in diameter, and the main guage is 24mm thick. The stem to back distance is 4.5mm, measured from the back of the stemm. The solid section of the stem is 21mm long then 9-20mm of movement below that.

or I could post a photo....

Re: Has anyone designed an indicator mount for a stock SD3?

Made some adjustments and added 2 slides for the indicators that dont have the lug on the back.  I also added 1mm to the slide clips.  My first designed seemed a little flimsy.

take a look at what i just uploaded and see if that works for you.
I cant' export 3dm, can you read stp or igs?

Re: Has anyone designed an indicator mount for a stock SD3?

Just going to bed, but yes, both of those are supported formats. Rhino should read just about anything.
