Topic: Lyman Filament Extruder V3

Re: Lyman Filament Extruder V3

He has another video where he is working on motor control.  It is being run by the electronics rather than simply plugging it into DC.  It also looks like he is running the auger through the hopper partway up rather than having the pellets drop in from above.   I'm not sure if that would make a more consistent feed, it seems like the ratio between pellet size and size of the screw would be more important.  Clever use of the fishing reel as a guide, but I'm thinking that costs a little more than $14.

Re: Lyman Filament Extruder V3

It looks like he's cooling it with water in order to get it to cool really quickly and then hold itself up (and not stress the still-melted plastic nearer to the nozzle).  I thought that moisture in filament was a really bad thing, extruding-wise.  Is it possible to get that much moisture out later, by baking it in an oven or whatnot (I can't think of any possible way to get more moisture into filament than pouring water over it while it's still hot)?

Re: Lyman Filament Extruder V3

The water cooling is how all the big boys do it smile the amount of moisture actually absorbed is negligible for the time frame used here. It is always a good idea to store filament in a moisture-less enviroment just to keep levels in check.

Re: Lyman Filament Extruder V3

Will this work with PLA? I haven't used mine much since the challenge has been to cool the PLA so it can be wound up reliable and not kink when it is coming out.

Re: Lyman Filament Extruder V3

PLA should not kink on a Filastruder, if the guide is placed correctly and the board is the right length. The challenge is diameter variance.

Re: Lyman Filament Extruder V3

I was going to mention that Daiwa reel too;)
Thats definately more than $14, and it looks like its just being used as a line counter mostly?
Daiwa make a line counter for about $5 if thats all its being used for but I guess he doesnt go fishing anymore...

Re: Lyman Filament Extruder V3

He is using the reel to guide the filament back and forth on to the spool.   You can do it with a $14 servo but if you don't want to get into programming a microcontroller you have to go with a more expensive or complex mechanical solution.  Tim estimated that he has about $400 in parts there, which is fine if you're just doing something for yourself and you have $40, 000 to play with.

40,000 would make some nice tinker money smile

Re: Lyman Filament Extruder V3

Hes posted it on thingiverse.... $900 BOM..... We can do way better.

Re: Lyman Filament Extruder V3

Thrust bearing in the pellets? Hello contamination!

Also he's getting +/-0.10mm variation:

Right now the tolerance is about +/- 0.10mm.

He definitely has not designed for cost - he is using the same gearmotor for main drive and the puller, even though they have very different torque loads.

Also that BOM doesn't include all of the parts...

Re: Lyman Filament Extruder V3

This is why im waiting on IAN to have a winder test kit ready. i think with a combination of that and a similar water tank solution we can get industrial quality filament at home under 350 total.

Credit where credit is due.

Lyman is freakin' amazing.  He open sources everything, including bom.   He is also the dude who started this movement, imo.

Re: Lyman Filament Extruder V3

Blaze being the first to throw one together that fit the contest far from makes him the one to have started this,  he is just the first one who submitted a working cheap prototype so he got all the news coverage. There are plenty of people in the background that weren't doing it for a prize and imho deserve far more credit then they are getting. (no im not one of them i just got in about a month ago)

Re: Lyman Filament Extruder V3

Well, link away.   Let's give their professionally done open source designs credit too!

And yes, I'm sure there are 100s of people who were working in private on one thing or another.   It takes true courage to be as open and professional as Lyman was, with no promise of reward.  It's one thing to toss ideas around, it's a totally different one to have decades of proven experience in the field of manufacturing and design and then to donate that time & talent to the community at large.

Also, the filastruder is a fork of the lyman, btw.  An extremely well done and much more practical fork - but a version which utilized the open source nature of those designs to help move this project forward.
