Well, link away. Let's give their professionally done open source designs credit too!

And yes, I'm sure there are 100s of people who were working in private on one thing or another. It takes true courage to be as open and professional as Lyman was, with no promise of reward. It's one thing to toss ideas around, it's a totally different one to have decades of proven experience in the field of manufacturing and design and then to donate that time & talent to the community at large.

Also, the filastruder is a fork of the lyman, btw. An extremely well done and much more practical fork - but a version which utilized the open source nature of those designs to help move this project forward.

Check out on thingiverse:

http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:145500

Check out the instruction manual:

http://thingiverse-production.s3.amazon … MANUAL.pdf

Blaze being the first to throw one together that fit the contest far from makes him the one to have started this, he is just the first one who submitted a working cheap prototype so he got all the news coverage. There are plenty of people in the background that weren't doing it for a prize and imho deserve far more credit then they are getting. (no im not one of them i just got in about a month ago)

He is using the reel to guide the filament back and forth on to the spool. You can do it with a $14 servo but if you don't want to get into programming a microcontroller you have to go with a more expensive or complex mechanical solution. Tim estimated that he has about $400 in parts there, which is fine if you're just doing something for yourself and you have $40, 000 to play with.

The water cooling is how all the big boys do it the amount of moisture actually absorbed is negligible for the time frame used here. It is always a good idea to store filament in a moisture-less enviroment just to keep levels in check.

It looks like he's cooling it with water in order to get it to cool really quickly and then hold itself up (and not stress the still-melted plastic nearer to the nozzle). I thought that moisture in filament was a really bad thing, extruding-wise. Is it possible to get that much moisture out later, by baking it in an oven or whatnot (I can't think of any possible way to get more moisture into filament than pouring water over it while it's still hot)?
