Topic: Feedback on my first print please

Hi everyone,

I've just completed my first print after following the excellent advice offered here.

It took a bit of fiddling to get my bed level and at the right z-height, but I think I have it 'close enough' until my pressure guage arrives.

Anyway, the following object was printed at .4mm layer height, and I'd love some feedback on what the different problems with it may be.

eg the corners seem to get a bit of buildup, and along one edge the layers split a little.

So feedback would be appreciated and I'll tune my printer accordingly.

Re: Feedback on my first print please

You are overextruding a bit - make sure to run through both the Extruder Calibration and Flowrate Calibrations on the Wiki page:
http://www.soliwiki.com/Calibration_of_ … on_stepper
and
http://www.soliwiki.com/Calibration_of_the_flow_rate

They will clean up the overall 'splodginess'.... and help with the overall appearance of the print as the banding will be reduced as well (the visibility of it anyway).

If it still persists in JUST the corners - corner buildup can be cleaned up by small tweaks in 'X-Y Jerk' - For the purposes of discussion consider this the 'instantaneous velocity of an axis from at rest'... it also forms the basis of how fast/slow the extruder slows when turning corners particularly ones of 90°. Try bumping this value a very small bit at a time - a little makes a big difference. Values of 21.5 or 22 can make huge differences to corner quality.

The split is probably due to a combination of over extrusion and possibly build environment. Was this printed enclosed or unenclosed ? But basically splitting is a result of uneven cooling which when you overextrude can occur much more readily than a calibrated extrusion. It can also be caused by too low an extrusion temp - raising it by just 2-3°C can make a huge difference... Then you move on to doing things like using an enclosure and making sure to leave the heated bed to 'soak' at tempreature for a good 10mins or so etc...

I can almost guarantee the split was from low extrusion temps which = bad layer bonding

Adrian is right though...2-3 degrees can make all the difference.

You might need an extra perimeter or two to keep from getting gaps on the low curve at the top as well.

Good first effort though, you're on the right track.  My first print didn't look that good

Re: Feedback on my first print please

Thanks everyone. I managed a couple of pretty decent prints after that, and then I took the printer home.

Which of course screwed up the Y-Axis again, and then the bed needed re levelling.

I eventually was able to run the calibrations suggested, but that's brought to light the issue of getting things to 'stick'. I guess the over extruding was providing that extra plastic and making a better starting layer.

I only got two prints finished all night
1) a small filament guide, needed because my filament got in an awful twist and tangle.
2) The small calibration box posted elsewhere on these forums. The walls of which measured .41mm which I thought was pretty much spot on smile

Unfortunately I have to be at work today, otherwise I'd have my head glued to the printer all day again I'm sure.
