Topic: Monoprice Filament ?

Has anyone tried the filament Monoprice offers?  It's tauted as "1 Kg spool features a thickness of 1.75mm ±0.10mm, with a roundness variation of only 0.05mm." so it's not the most precise, but it's only $26 for 1 Kg (or less, if you buy multiple rolls).  For knock-around filament to just try a few things, I could go for some, but not if it is difficult to work with.

Anyone out there tried it yet?

Re: Monoprice Filament ?

This is very new, several people from the Makerbot Google Group have ordered some, but I am aware of absolutely no one having used it yet. I contacted Monoprice customer service asking if they had any sample pictures of items made using this filament and they have not yet responded. When I see something, I'll post an update here. In the meantime, if you're not afraid of clogging a nozzle, there's no reason not to try it; it's cheap.

I don't understand why people are all exited about this...

$26 + 9.17 shipping = $35.17

I have been buying Octave on Amazon for $31 shipped...

You're not comparing straight across, though.  If you have Prime, then it's cheaper, yes.  Or if you go with the super saver shipping, which is 5-8 days.  But if you go with the 3-5 day shipping, it's $39 vs $35 at monoprice.

Re: Monoprice Filament ?

I saw someone said Monoprice shipping for 10 spools is $22. So that comes to $28.20/spool. If you're running a business and you can save 10% of your material costs, it would be worth considering. If you're a hobbyist and go through a spool a month, I doubt it would ever be worth it (unless the quality of the black is better than expected; Octave Black is notoriously bad.)

Re: Monoprice Filament ?

The shipping varies a bit.  For instance, 10 rolls for me would be $19.19 to ship.  However, when you order 10 rolls, they drop the price to $25.10 a roll, or $27/roll shipped.  I'm honestly not sure how monoprice does it.  I know a small company that found it cheaper to order some cables from monoprice for equipment they manufacture, because monoprice was cheaper than their supplier direct from China, and same quality.  It's kind of scary.

Sorry, kind of took my thread off on a tangent, when I'm really just trying to find the best bang for my buck.  Right now, I use Octave, but if I can get something equal or better for less, I'm gonna be all over it.

Re: Monoprice Filament ?

I have run a few spools of the octave black without any issues. I know they had problems previously but I have had good luck with them...

The problem with MonoPrice is that they are notorious for resourcing for the same product. if you order 3 times, you might get product from 3 different suppliers.

Anyway, lets see what happens with people test it.
