Topic: CNC 3020 For Sale

Selling my CNC 3020. This unit is fully tested, working, and even comes with some pretty good extras.
For one, it comes with it's own computer. This is a Windows XP based machine that dual boots Ubuntu 10 EMC2 edition (CNC controller software built in to the OS). See the pics.
Second, it comes with the micro end mills (2), 1/8" carbide end mills (5), engraver bits (2) & the 4 clamps, fuses and tools.
It has not been used to cut anything heavy, and everything is in proper working order (the Chinese assembler connected the X axis to the 4th axis on the pins in the controller, but I figured that out & set it right).

These sell for $600-$750 online (CNC and tools only), I will let it go for $600, with the PC, the extra tools, end mills, etc.

Unfortunately, I will only ship it if you pay shipping, this will be 60 lbs via UPS or USPS (if in Canada) and would likely cost $125 to ship. (The CNC alone is 45 lbs)

Local pickup preferred, I live in eastern Iowa, right across from Illinois in the Quad Cities.

Everything on the desk (minus my AC remote by the monitor) is included.

I'm just typing in coordinates, but it shows all axis' moving.

Hmmmmm I'm interested. It's bonus time here at my work soon so if I get a big enough one I might snag this. What kind of materials can you mill?

Re: CNC 3020 For Sale

I've seen videos of it milling pockets in mild steel, but as far as a sure thing, you can mill aluminum, copper, brass, wood, ABS, etc. Mind you, it all depends on hardness or materials. It's not a power house, but it holds it's own. I mean, it's a desktop CNC, it does what it was designed to do.

I think, aside from milling small parts, the reason I wanted it originally was milling PCBs, & I was considering slowly milling a path in the back of an aluminum bed for nichrome wire & then filling it in with silicone. Would have made a sweet heated build platform. Imagine how close you could mill those paths in the back of the plate. Done right, you could fit a super long length of nichrome wire in there & get very fast bed warm ups.

That was the thought, I set it up, got the computer configured & then messed around a bit & haven't touched it since, just don't have the time anymore. hmm If I did have the time, I would start making those heated beds to sell.

Re: CNC 3020 For Sale

Got updates from the buyer, evidently UPS broke my carefully packed LCD monitor in transit, now the buyer is waiting on claims. He said that the box bottom was bulged out from supporting weight, which makes no sense, the bottom of the box was heavy duty cardboard formed around a thick piece of plywood shipping crate.
Sounds like UPS disregarded my box labels indicating 'fragile' - 'This end up!' - and their own rules to lift from the bottom with their legs, not their back.

Good ole UPS, wish Solidoodle would quit using them too, bad experiences across the board.

We learned long ago not to put 'fragile' on the boxes... it's like wearing a red shirt to a bull fight wink

I didn't ever think about that.

That's actually very upsetting.

Re: CNC 3020 For Sale

Cool article.  Here is the relevant quote-

One disheartening result was that our package received more abuse when marked "Fragile" or "This Side Up." The carriers flipped the package more, and it registered above-average acceleration spikes during trips for which we requested careful treatment.

Yup, I KNOW I packed my shipment properly, I know I bubble wrapped the monitor, secured it & labeled the box, this end up & fragile... Then it arrived beat up...

And this:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v651/jaythedogg/denial1.jpg

I called UPS & went to the extension that the lady put on the letter & she must have known it was me before we spoke as she picked up the phone & hung up immediately (I heard her) then I called back & got her voicemail & after explaining that I was aggravated at her for hanging up on me after I held on the line to talk to her, I proceeded to tell them how wrong they were about their denying the claim because of how carefully everything was packed and secured. Then I told the voicemail box that I would pursue legal action with my family attorney.
It probably wouldn't have been so aggravated of a message if I hadn't:
a)Gotten home, grabbed the mail, let my dog in from the front hallway only for him to immediately stop & diarrhea on our carpet.
b) opened the letter right after said diarrhea cleanup/washing hands/putting away groceries.
c) Got hung up on immediately after holding to speak with the lady from the extension right after I entered the extension number & wound up speaking to a very hard to understand operator who explained to me that I needed to dial the lady's extension that I had just dialed.... GAH!

I REALLY DISLIKE UPS!

Oh, & to quote the eBay buyer "I'm awaiting the outcome of the UPS claims on Monday to leave your feedback..."
(italics mine)

Thanks UPS, you've possibly screwed my perfect feedback score because a buyer wants to punish a seller for something out of his control...

Re: CNC 3020 For Sale

Even though they can't look inside your box to see how well it was packed, they can deduce that it was not properly packed because it failed to withstand the highest level of abuse they could inflict on it.

Re: CNC 3020 For Sale

Back in the days of pencil and paper drawing I helped design the UPS facility in Louisville. They have 10 foot drops and 10 MPH conveyors for all packages except the large heavy ones.  Packaging engineers recommend packaging testing including drop and vibration testing to confirm the packaging is correct. I think that is why so many packages are so damn difficult to open and get the goods out.

Nice!

The lady called me & said they were shipping it back to me so I can prove the damage isn't my fault, which is going to be difficult, as it was already opened & contents removed.

Re: CNC 3020 For Sale

I've worked in the industry for close to 30 years.

NEVER pack a machine like the router in a cardboard box.
Build a box around it with hardboard (Masonite) or light plywood after ataching it to a heavy piece of wood on the bottom.
Place a garbage bag over the machine and use can foam insulation to fill voids on all sides and squirt some on the top just before you seal it up.
With this type of packing you'll almost never have any damage. I've shipped several custom made 1/20th scale locomotives that cost over $20,000 this way and never any damage.
ALWAYS buy the insurance. It is easier to get the claim paid with it.

Never sign for a package before opening and inspecting it. That away if there is any damage, it can be noted on the bill. If it is damaged, you can refuse it.

If the package is not up to industry standards, the claim will be denied because of the packaging.

Never use Fedex. They are the worse in paying claims and have higher damage ratio that UPS, DHL and USPS.
(i was shipped a locomotive valued at $1000 and the gentleman that sent it to me, took it to a Fedex store to have it packed and shipped. When I received it, some detail parts were damaged and it looked like it happened when it was being packed. $40 in damage claim denied cause the packaging was good enough.)

Hope this help you next time you ship something.

Awww man, should have sold it to me tongue

Re: CNC 3020 For Sale

Got a call this morning from the Crawford & Co lay handling my claim, she talked to the fellow I sent it to & he described everything, & after investigating UPS' claims she found out that I was actually in the right.

Forms are OTW & after I fax them back in, they will send a check.

Re: CNC 3020 For Sale

So is the moral of the story "If you have something expensive and hard to sell, find a 'buyer' and mark the package fragile. Then collect on the insurance from the inevitable damage and toss the item in question. Presto!"

24

Re: CNC 3020 For Sale

No, that's totally immoral. It wasn't hard to sell at all. It was also securely packaged, UPS was just too rough.
