Topic: SD3 acting like a paper weight

Let me fist say that this group is Awesome!!!  If it wasn't for the forums, I would have drove back to Brooklyn and demanded a refund.....

My SD3 will not print anymore, it acts like a $800 paperweight.  I uninstalled the software, re-install the software, checked the cables and even replaced the USB cable.

I can connect to the printer, but it will not print.  Cannot control anything unless I use  "Emergency Stop" in Repetier.  Bed is heating up to about 75, but the extruder has a problem getting past 55. 

Once in a blue moon the extruder does heat to about 210 and the bed 90, but still no printing.

Any ideas before I get in my car and go to Brooklyn ?

We got back to you over E-mail, but just to paraphrase - we always willing to help. Just to add a little elucidation - It seems that something strange is going on with your printer. We don't get too many cases where the hot-end ceases to heat at 55. You might want to check under your insulation sheath - is your thermal paste white and flaky? Or is it strong looking and thick? This could be part of the problem.

Paste is strong and thick.  Pic attached.

I am going to try to reset everything again.  I even have a fan on blowing on the Arduino board to prevent over heating.

Is there a way to reset the board to factory defaults?  The only adjustment I made was in the EEPROM concerning STEPS Per MM.

If I asked to extrude 100mm, I would get 130mm.  Changed my steps to 105.4 and it successfully extruded 100mm

Looks like a communication error.  Someone else posted similar problems when their baud rate was set a little bit off.  Also, if you have another USB cable, I'd try that.

The issue is in your pic of the paste! The copper wire is pulled out of the connector. Same thing I had when my machine arrived.

Luckily its a simple fix. I spent many hours troubleshooting this myself. It will cause mintemp errors in Repetier and connection/driver identification issues.

Tealvince, Staffordknot & Krythis...  Thanks for the pointers and support!

I am going to give your suggestions a try before calling Solidoodle tomorrow.

Quick note: Solidoodle support has been very supportive and gave a contact number for a tech.  Going to give them a call tomorrow if I can't get my SD3 printing.  They seem very sympathetic after a number of emails and willing to help.

Will keep you posted.
