Topic: Extruder Blob/Damaged Hot End Insulation

Solidoodle Folks:

I was having a great time printing tonight until I had to run a wrench to my friend down the street, but lending a wrench turned into loading a truck. By the time I got home, the print had "finished" and things weren't great (see Oh...crap picture).

I reheated the extruder for a short time and the plastic came free but it took the lower piece of hot end insulation with it and some insulation fibers just wouldn't come out of the blob. Please take a look at the attached pictures and let me know if I can get this insulation back where it needs to be or am SOL.

The extruder heats to temp, extrusion works properly, and the build plate appears undamaged. Any advice is appreciated.

(PS: I've also installed smartphone compatible VPN software on my phone so I can pause prints if I get stuck somewhere in the future.)

Re: Extruder Blob/Damaged Hot End Insulation

You're fine, if it doesn't go back on then get some fiber glass mating (home depot near paint isle) and some kapton tape (1/4" works best) from amazon. (~$6 shipped) Then put a single wrap of fiber glass mating 1/4" x 2" around the nozzle and tape it in place with the kapton tape.

You should get the 1/4" kapton tape anyways as it will come in handy for when you have to clean out a clogged nozzle. Also, make sure you print out lawsy MK4 jigsaw replacement to have as spare parts. It's on thingiverse.

SD3 w/ mods:
Glass bed with QU-BD heat pad upgrade, threadless ballscrew w/ 8mm smooth rod, spectra line belt replacement, lawsy MK5 extruder, Lawsy replacement carriage, E3D hotend, Ramps 1.4 w/ reprap discount controller, DRV8825 drivers, 12v 30A PS, Acrylic case, Overkill Y-idlers, Filament alarm, Extruder fan + more.

1/4" Kapton is 3D printing duct tape.  Everyone should have a roll.

Thanks 2n2r5 and Ian, I'm up and running again. Printing the Lawsy Mk4 parts is running smoothly.

Marking solved.
