Topic: Newbie has issues with first print

Here is my first print with my new Solidoodle 2.  I am using Repetier and a glass bed with hairspray.  I have 2 issues that I need help resolving.  Both are shown in the attachments.

1 One end of the part is lifting off of the print bed.

2 The top of the part has holes, and is not solid.

Any help would be appreciated.

What is your infill?  ABS contracts when cooling, so higher infil means more likely to peel.  Confirm with experts, but I think a cover keeps ABS from cooling as much which reduces peeling.  Try a different brand of hairspray, and higher bed temp.  Get an IR thermometer to read true bed temp?  Glass is IR opaque (good thing!).

note that it looks pretty good for a first print!

SD2 Sanguinololu 1.3a atmega1284p, wood platform, lawsy's carriages, braided fishing line, pallet wood overhead spool mount, carboard/magnet enclosure, glass bed, E3D v6, bed levelling knobs, extended z-stop, 25A DC-DC SSR for bed heater, everything fixed to the SD2 frame, marlin firmware with some adjustments and extra failsafes enabled.  I'll never give up on you, little printer that could(n't)!

You also may not have enough plastic going through. Check the diameter of your filament and what the filament diameter the printer thinks its getting. If they don't match, fix that.

Thanks.  I will check those things tomorrow.  I downloaded repetier directly from The Solidoodle website, which should already have the correct settings.  But, now that I think about it, I am not sure of the details of the filament.  I bought the printer used, and it came with the filament.  I will try printing the same part with the filament that I bought from the Solidoodle website.

Since we are talking about bed temperature, what is the point of the bed being heated?

it helps combat warping, as it slows the cooling that leads to warping.

For an object like that, the heating of the bed ought to be enough to prevent the curling up.  But when it's not, you can always add a brim in Slic3r settings and that tends to, at the cost of a little more filament and a tiny bit of extra work when the print job is done, prevent curling in almost any print.

Since you bought the printer used, you cannot ensure that the settings are correct. The original owner may have changed some settings which is causing your top layer issues. Check out  the wiki.solidoodle.com web site and run through the printer tuning steps to verify your flow and feed rate on your printer.

I tried printing the same part a few more times with black ABS that I got from solidoodle.com.  I haven't had any more issues with the the print curling from the bed.  However, I still have holes in the top layer.  I don't know what the current infill setting is.  From looking at the print, I would say that it is a low percentage.  How do I change the infill settings in Repetier?  Also, where can I get more information on what the other settings in Repetier do?  I am kind of overwhelmed when I try to play with the settings.  There are so many of them, and I have no idea what they do.
