Topic: Brand new extruder hot end

I got today a new hot end after my old one got clogged.
After a few minutes I saw drops as you can see here:

I also have a melted pla at the top of the block.

What should I do?
Thanks.

Re: Brand new extruder hot end

If you slide the heat wrap off you can see where it is oozing from. You will probably need to tighten it up. If you have some teflon tape, you can put some on the threads of the barrel (be careful not to have any go in the barrel) to make a good seal. Is it leaking from the PEEK side or the nozzle side?

SD3 w/ mods:
Glass bed with QU-BD heat pad upgrade, threadless ballscrew w/ 8mm smooth rod, spectra line belt replacement, lawsy MK5 extruder, Lawsy replacement carriage, E3D hotend, Ramps 1.4 w/ reprap discount controller, DRV8825 drivers, 12v 30A PS, Acrylic case, Overkill Y-idlers, Filament alarm, Extruder fan + more.

RMA that bad boy to Solidoodle.

Re: Brand new extruder hot end

See the attached pictures.
I can't slide the heat warp if it's cold because the pla is sticking it.

RMA ... but just as curiosity... I can't see where the PEEK and the barrel meet. Is it oozing out of that? There shouldn't be anywhere for the filament to ooze from the block. That should all be solid.

Re: Brand new extruder hot end

I have a spare SD hotend.  I checked it and it's only screwed on a couple turns at most.  If I tried installing it without tightening it, I would have a similar mess.  Mine did not come with instructions so I think it would be in their best interest to begin sending some instructions or at least some warnings.

Cheers,

I fixed the leaking smile
Now I get a wavy pattern, you can see it in the skirt and the bottom of the print (picture attached).

Re: Brand new extruder hot end

Back the lower the z screw an 1/8 to 1/4 turn. You might just be just a tad too close to the bed.

Re: Brand new extruder hot end

The wavy pattern is normal.  I think it is from the number of steps/mm of the extruder motor driving the filament directly.  The S1 didn't do this, and had a stepper with a gearbox that used around 700 steps/mm.  Panucatt sells a stepper driver that does 32x microstepping (rather than 16x).  I've been meaning to get one and see if it smooths it out.

Re: Brand new extruder hot end

I think it's the motor or the driver, I'll try to replace it.
The fill of the print seems to be a bit lower than the perimeter as you can see in the video:

Re: Brand new extruder hot end

I have had leakage from the hot end before. You are likely going to be able to print with it for a little while, but because of the leakage of peek, you may get the inside to hot, and plastic will degrade within the barrel, leading to clogging. Just as a heads up.

Re: Brand new extruder hot end

Besides SD who is a good source for replacement nozzles? I have a clogged on soaking and I'm down.

Is that wavy pattern on this print of the throwing star magnet too? It looks like It was on all layers of this print making a uniform pattern.

I got mine from here: http://www.tridprinting.com/

Hotends.com is good too, if you're there at just the right time. I think it's noon on Monday, or Friday.

Re: Brand new extruder hot end

I have another problem, during the print the temperature is dropping from 190 to a low point that I get "cold extrusion prevented" and it won't raise again until I stop the print.
Is it possible that the thermistor is malfunction?
The fan is off and the hot end is covered with the thermal isolation.
