Topic: Max Bed Temp?

ok...
so I've still got curling for for the 1" of printer bed closes to the front of the printer, and about 1/2" on the left and right...

currently, I'm rolling the printer with a piece of pyrex heat-treated glass and hairspray (treseme seems to give the best grip for me)

and running it at a base temp around 109 degrees....

I'm wondering if the metal binder clips holding the glass on are acting like heat sinks and cooling the edges...
or if i can just run the bed higher to compensate...

so the question is,  those of you who binder-clip your glass on,  do you put an insulator between it and the glass, and if so, what?

Are you using an enclosure?

Re: Max Bed Temp?

i've got foamcore on all the open sides.  the front side stops 4" short of blocking the whole thing so I can see in, but I block that with cardboard when I print.

Re: Max Bed Temp?

The metal binder clips don't do much in terms of transferring heat.

Do you have the resistor or silicone/nichrome bed?

Re: Max Bed Temp?

If you check the thermal images I posted over in http://www.soliforum.com/topic/2230/the … ed-setups/ you'll see the clips and their effect on the bed temp... which is indeed negligible.

They are acting as a heat sink, but their thermal transmission is lower than the rate at which the bed heats.. so the bed stays hot, and the clips slowly heat up...

So yes they technically are dissipating heat, but at a rate that is well below what the bed heats at.

However, as you'll see in the pics, if you still have a standard Solidoodle heated bed, the drop off across the plate is in the order of 10°C edge to edge anyway... the edges are going to be much cooler than the center even on a bare bed.

Re: Max Bed Temp?

yeah, I have the standard bed...

again, what's the limit on temp then,
is there any notable fix on this?

BTW - saw the thermals,   are those all SD3?  (I have an SD2)

I've gotten my bed up to 100 c.  I've read on here that someone runs their's at 105.  It is a pain waiting on the bed to heat up, but after reading some posts I have been setting a pot holder on the bed while heating it up.  It helps quite a bit.

Re: Max Bed Temp?

I think SD now limits the bed temp to 85c

^can be changed in firmware

I think it's a hardware limit - less powerful heating bed.

Re: Max Bed Temp?

I have a standard SD3, and I cranked the software up to 110° just to see how hot it can get, and about 98°C was the max. it got to.

To print or, 3D print, that is the question...
SD3 printer w/too many mods,  Printrbot Simple Maker Ed.,  FormLabs Form 1+
AnyCubic Photon, Shining 3D EinScan-S & Atlas 3D scanners...
...and too much time on my hands.

Re: Max Bed Temp?

the heated bed limit is due to 12V not being able to heat the bed hot enough, the software does not even begin applying PWM to the bed, you mind as well plug 12V into the bed. The problem is the heat is being synced off to the ambient environment. An enclosure helps this greatly as the ambient air can warm up a bit.
