Topic: Head slippage

Two times in a row, the head slipped 5 - 6 mm relative to the bed, making the filament end up in the wrong place.

I was close by both times, and I heard almost a grinding noise. A little bit like cogs slipping in a gearbox.

Should I tighten the belts? Or is there something else I should do?

sounds like the head is hitting the bed, resetting the x,y, or z coordinates. This happens if the print goes far off of the bed, or if the plastic is really stuck on and won't move. This generally happens by being to close to the bed if that's the problem. Try upping the z screw a bit, and make sure the dimensions on the printer and your x,y and z stops are good.

In Repetier Host, there is an option in the Slic3r settings for "Z-lift."  This causes the bed to move down vertically before any horizontal movement is performed.  This has helped some users in the past with avoiding similar problems.

@highc7691: In both cases, the head was > 4 mm above the bed and well within the X/Y boundaries. The plastics had very good adhesion to the bed, but the alternative to slipping cogs would be to move the plastics (not good, either).

@op7ical: I use Z-lift (1 mm). Maybe it's not enough?
