Topic: Proactive Hotend replacement

To be proactive I want to print a MK4 ( i think?) and get some replacement hot end upgrades.

I have seen multiple threads about hot ends and aftermarket and tweaks tunes etc but I am not clear from a hardware and software standpoint which ones are more or less plug and play into the SD2?

For example I saw Qu-BD has hot end kits for $38 look nice and I know they have great service and fast delivery. Can I buy that? It has a motor option too, can I just swap out?

Then I see all these j-ends etc. Can I just buy one and if it fits or print a new lower plate will it work do I need specific type of heater,connectors etc

I have seen good,wiki for this stuff but it explains the hot ends but not really how that relates to  the SD hotend and replacement.

Any ideas or brands/links to go buy would be great

I just ordered this: http://www.tridprinting.com/Hot-Ends/ I would have ordered from www.hotends.com but you have to be there at just the right time.
There is plenty of info here and elsewhere about assembly and implementation, and yes, some assembly required. If you ask me, that's half the fun. I was a bit nervous at first but I did my research and now I am kind of excited. I should have it by Thursday, I'll let you know how it goes.
Also, you certainly want the MK4 for this.

Cool,

So that $55 hotend kit, then just swap in some new connectors for current SD2 ones and print the MK4 and it should drop in? Of course have to recalibrate.

So where you get the connectors for the SD2 wires? link?

And the qu-bd one here looks really cool and low cost is this usable

And what is the benefit of a new  J-hot end vs the SD2 one

When Hotends.com is out of stock, check the parts.  Often the pieces are all available even if the assembled one isn't.  Putting one together isn't hard and the price is about the same.

OK yeah I saw that. QU-BD has $18 hot end and looks like I just add $15 worth of peek, resistor, thermistor?

put yes you have to machine. i can not imagine more then a $5 to cut

Is the J-head longer then the solidoodle hotend?

Most machine shops have a minimum of 1 hour. If you have a personal lathe then it's worth it.

My new J-head is 7mm shorter. That plus the MK4 should give you more Z room, even with glass, over stock.
