Topic: Time to show off

So far I've been mostly testing, trying different things and such.  My printing is still not up to par, but it's coming along.  One of the things I plan on doing is printing little dioramas of characters from games, movies, cartoons, etc.

I started printing the characters from Team Fortress, but I'm still working on those.  I also love classic toons, so here is my latest:

Marvin The Martian.  He will soon be joined by Duck Dodgers.

The model is still pretty rough, and needs to be finished.  It will be sanded further, then primed and painted.

To print or, 3D print, that is the question...

i love this 2 characters... think of their positions to be printable without support.. smile

Re: Time to show off

How are you extracting the models from TF2? I am a avid GMOD player and I would love to pull models from GMOD and print. I couldn't figure out how to do it?

I edit my posts a lot.

Re: Time to show off

thats a really nice model cant wait to see it painted smile

i also use my printer the most for printing characters from games
i like your idea of making little dioramas maybe il give that a try too smile

Re: Time to show off

Here is one I had a hard time with simply because it was originally a 3DS Max image and it contained well over 300K triangles.  It turned out that 80% of that was in her hair, so I was able to remove it and print it separately.  The model obviously need some clean up, but it doesn't look to bad.

Edit:

I forgot to add, she's about 7" tall (including the gun) and it took about 5 hrs to print w/.15mm layers, not support and no infill.

The last image shows her with hair, but it's only the left half.  At the moment I can't fit both halves of the hair because her ears are in the way.  I may have to amputate....

can you send me the full stl (with hair) please ?
i would like to print it

Re: Time to show off

OK, so I'll do 2 attachments.  The first attachment will be the girl with the hair and jet pack separate.  The second one will be the complete model with the hair and jet pack on.

I'll be curious to see if anyone can print this in one piece.

Edit:  Hmmm... that didn't work.  Apparently I can't attach a 4.6MB zip file.

That's a great site , I bookmarked it for future use.  Here are the links:

hem.... HOW do you print this without support ?

the harms can't be print 'On air'.. it's impossible to print them without any support..

Not impossible.

You get creative with how you segment it and place it on the print bed, so nearly everything is build up vertically.

Try this .stl

haaaaaa you cut it.... now i understand

it's because when we said "no support", we always think too "as a one piece object"... sure you can always print a model "without support" if you cut it into small enough pieces

smile

I prefer to cut the model and print it in segments that don't require support.  It's a lot easier to glue 3 or 4 pieces together than to remove dozens if not hundreds of tiny little support pieces and clean up after them.

I decided to name my Sci-Fi girl:  Domino.  Here she is... with her hair on.

Re: Time to show off

So the helmet of the martian is sanded or you put a solution on it as well? I noticed all the ridges in the female, is that typical of prints or does the solidoodle let you print a 'draft'?  (sorry, every new to 3d prints)

very cool though! love em wink

Marvin the Matian is quite rough.  In those images, the helmet is snaded, the head, body and arms are natural (as printed), and the feet and helmet broom were brushed with acetone, which gives them the shine.

I started to work on him the other day, and I'm using modelling putty to fill in the tiny gaps and groves before I prep him for painting.

The girl is pretty much how it came out of the printer.  When I took those pictures I had only cleaned up the lower part of her right leg.

As for the ridges, that seems to be what some of my prints look like, and I wish I knew what caused it.  Each "ridge" repeats every 8-10 layers.  It's not a side to side shift, becuase what appears "inset" or pushed in on one side, is not pushed out on the opposite end.  Rather it appears that every few layers, the overall perimeter of the model is either "swollen" or "constricted", like a ripple.

If this was occurring only in a few places, I would think it was due to some kind of movement or wobble, but it's occuring throughout the entire vertical build with nearly perfect spacing, so I'm wondering if this is some slicing artifact.  I used Slic3r to slice this, becuase I was having a hard time slicing the hand with the gun in KiSSlicer.  Skeinforge is a lost cause to me, it fails to slice anything, so I no longer bother.

I'll try KiSSlicer again on a single part just to see if it produces the same ridges.

Re: Time to show off

The banding (as sad as it is to say) is normal.  It's related to backlash on the z-screw.  There are a number of fixes for this, and more being developed as we speak.  You can reduce it using a printed part, a 5/16 18 nut and a spring, but unless you replace the z-screw, you can't remove it entirely.

Search for z-wobble to see what's available and being developed.

Re: Time to show off

I've added a few extras to Domino, so she just about done, except for the paint job.

http://digistealth.com/Public/Hosted/Sci-Fi%20Girl_2.jpg

I also got a cheap dial indicator at Sears to level my print bed after I add the glass surface.  I printed Ian Johnson's dial holder, unfortunately it didn't fit well on my SD3 print head.  So I went ahead and remodeled the piece in Solidworks.  The resulting piece works quite well, and is held in place with 4 neodymium magnets

http://digistealth.com/Public/Hosted/Dial%20Indicator_sm.jpg

I'm thinking about drilling holes in the corner of the print bed, and embedding some magnets in there, then adding a adhesive metal strip to the edge of the glass, so everything is held in place magnetically.  I found the when I use document clips on the corners, it applies enough pressure to deflect the glass downward in the corners.  Additionally, the document clips get in the way sometimes, so I'd rather try something different.

Re: Time to show off

Do you mind posting the indicator mount?  I've been meaning to tweak it a bit for the SD3 but haven't had a chance to yet.  Thanks!

No problem, I've attached the STL file.

Just be aware that from what I can see, there's a lot of variation between individual machines, so this model may need some tweaking as well to fit your individual unit.  I did make some adjustments like enlarging the inner face diameter of the screw holes, which should allow enough play to fit most machines.   I also cut back the lower corner to create clearance for the wiring coming from the hot end.

http://digistealth.com/Public/Hosted/Dial%20Indicator_render.jpg

I used 1/4" x 3/32" neodymium magnets, 1 each for the lower holes, and 2 each (stacked) for the upper holes.  The upper magnets are the ones doing most of the holding, as they go up against the flat face of the black hex bolts, the lower ones, not so much as they are only holding the end of the lower screws.

I toyed with the idea of cutting the end of the lower screws flush with the face of the nut, but I haven't done it yet.  That would allow me to stack another set of magnets in the lower holes (just like on the upper ones), to get better holding.  However I don't think that is necessary for this, but it might be if I go for an extruder fan.
