Topic: Poll - have you gotten your fingers in extruder fan

this poll is to see how many peopel have gotten their fingers in the extruder fan while
moving the head  manually

EDIT: this is what happened when I got an allen wrench in the fan while adjusting the belts.

There must be 40mm fan guards that Solidoodle can buy in mass quantity for dirt cheap.  Even if it means losing 2mm of Y, it's a small price to pay for keeping your fingers whole.

Easy enough to flip the fan around since the other side of the fan has a built-in finger guard smile and there's just barely enough wire to do it without untapeing things wink

No, and I think a fan guard is pointless...can that fan really break your skin? I feel like I have touched it numerous times on purpose with no problems.

No, but some strings from melted filament has gone into it a couple of times, so that should be my question smile

Re: Poll - have you gotten your fingers in extruder fan

could always print a fan cover.

I haven't and didn't know this was a issue. I guess I'll have to pay attention to where my fingers go...

I did, but it was inconsequintial. I was more concerned with breaking the fan than hurting my fingers. From my incident, it doesn't have enough force to inflict severe damage unless your fingers are small or brittle.

I've cut my finger a couple of times, but they shipped the first few printers with a 20cfm jet engine back there.  I've since replaced it with something a little more gentle.

Re: Poll - have you gotten your fingers in extruder fan

the first time I bumped my finger in to the fan, it scared me enough to jump.  When i jumped back I scratched the back of my hand on the metal frame and drew blood. Laughed at my dumb ass.

So yes, the fan has caused me to bleed.  No, it did not cut me.

It smarts a bit though.

I got my fingers in the fan a couple of times but when i got the allen wrench in it while adjusting the belts (see photo above) it stung and I still have not found the wrench.

Re: Poll - have you gotten your fingers in extruder fan

The beauty of owning a 3d printer is the ability to create your own solutions to problems that you see. Anyone that is concerned about damaging the fan or their fingers should design a guard for the fan. Problem solved. These printers are on the market in a price range that beats the competition. Anything they add like a fan guard, or other upgrades increase the cost. Sure, they could add a $1 fan guard but if they took all of the upgrade suggestions in this forum, they would easily have a $1,500 printer instead of one that is far below the $1,000 price point. I am interested in adding additional components to my printer to improve it but I can do it one piece at a time as I can afford it.

Put my finger and put filament several times in my extruder fan. I have "devaned" it several times. So much so that when I replaced the fan last I bought and installed one of those in expensive mesh type fan filters and never had an issue again.

Re: Poll - have you gotten your fingers in extruder fan

that is a 30mm fan. I grabbed a fan gaurd stl off thingaverse and scaled guards for all my fans 30mm on up. printed it saves damage to fans by 'pokey fingers' like friends/family too. they think their helping trouble shoot probs by poking everything lol

Solidoodle 2 with Deluxe kit cover & glass bed with heater. and 2nd board SD2 used not 3rd and alum platform not installed yet still wood. also need cooling fan installed to board. use Repetier Host couple vers. Slic3r also have all free ware STL programs

My fan often needs a little nudge to get started.  A guard would make that harder to do.  And my fingers are tough.  LOL

Not to mention you wouldn't be able to have all that fun trying to print that replacement fan blade on thingiverse.
That does work by the way.
