Topic: Well i screwed up and dont know where to go from here.

Was trying to replace the crap extruder fan, and support told me to just splice in a new fan.  I did this, dont wire splices many times and must have got a loose wire crossed up somehow when I heatshrunk it.  Turned it on all seemed good. then silence and the magic smoke was leaving the wires for the fan.  Don't know if there was any further damage to wires connected to the Extruder system because they are all taped down super hard with yellow tape.

My questions are:

Where might I get that yellow tape, in Portland Oregon, to put it back together again?
What is it called?
And what if there is further damage to the wires?

Please help.

Also sending to support at solidoodle.

It's called Kapton tape:

There are two(?) possibilities of the problem, either one of your connections did not have enough contact between the two wires that it heated (doubtful) or you crossed positive and negative wires (more probable since there was smoke).  You won't know if there was damage until you open up the wiring.  Before permanently recreating the splice, I would test the positive and negative leads with a voltmeter to make sure you haven't burned out something on the control board or something is wrong on the wire.  I would then retry the fan to make sure nothing was fried there (I doubt there is).  Then I would be as careful as possible heatshrinking each splice separately and then make sure no bare wiring is visible.

The wires on the new fan are not melted at all, infact the melting started in the bundle itself right where the bundle is taped to the extruder motor.  I will get it apart on break or lunch. As for resplicing the wires, going to do what I should have done the first time, and put in a fan connector to make fan replacements easy.

Well got it apart and it looks like the trouble only happened thru the redblack wires that were spliced by solidoodle.  going to replacethem all anyway, and put on some connectors to make fan replacements fast.  also going to add wires for a future filament cooling fan upgrade.

Well found a big supplier of kapton tape here in Portland, and he gave me 3ft for free!  apparently off a sample roll!  That guy rocks, If you need Kaptop Call Rich at Taulatin www.professionalplastics.com.

Rewired for the fan and also connected a X-axis motor fan and seems to be working.  about to do my first test print with the new setup.
