Topic: SD3 Noob: Printing worm gear question

I tried printing a worm gear but it didn't come out right. I used standard 3mm profile.

Thank you,

If I would print something like this I would print in 0.1

May need the cooling fan mod on the extruder to do this.

Slicer - Simplify3D

Re: SD3 Noob: Printing worm gear question

I need to print a worm gear as well. Do you have a link to the STL that you are using?

There is a chance that you might need to print the Worm Shaft in half along its longest axis and acetone glue the 2 parts together afterward.  An example of this can be found here:

Re: SD3 Noob: Printing worm gear question

Try changing the order in which the perimeters are printed to do the outside perimeter last.  Skeinforge has this setting on the Fill tab and you'd set it to Loop > Perimeter > Infill.  May still get the same result but at least you'd be giving yourself the best chance.  Slow down your perimeter speed too would help.

Re: SD3 Noob: Printing worm gear question

Can you do the perimeter order in Slic3r?
It seems the outers are always lasy.

Well I see in Slic3r:
Inside-outer to inner perimters are first (if more then 1 perimeter set)
then infil
then final outer perimeter
then next layer

This is the solution but as someone pointed out a fan mod is probably needed.

some .1mm threads

Re: SD3 Noob: Printing worm gear question

I (and many others I've seen here) print working threads on my filament holder on thingiverse  http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:38222
I don't use a fan and I used .3mm and it works well.  Haven't heard any bad feedback from the others that have printed it as well.

Re: SD3 Noob: Printing worm gear question

Departed, is that the cutoff piece from the AR model? I had printed that part so that the cut-plane was facing the bed and the threads were being printed at a 45 degree angle from the bed. At .3mm height it still came out looking great. Unfortunately no pics were taken of just the threads.

Those buffer threads look pretty good I'm impressed, I usually just use .3 and just run the tap through just to save time.

Cmetzel, IMHO your thing is the shite and has been working fantastically for me for a couple months now!!!
I was concerned originally that the thread wouldn't work after reading other people's 'horror' stories relating to printing threads. However I was completely amazed at how well it came out, and that the threads worked perfectly fine right off the print bed without any cleanup using the Solidoodle .3mm Slic3r profile. Also, I don't use a fan, as I just haven't gotten to around to that mod yet.

SD2 w/ mods: Rumba controller, ATX PSU, SD pro case, glass bed, with more to come...
