Topic: Z-axis anti-backlash upgrade

After trying out Meshmoth's Z-axis nuthugger I saw some room for improvement... So I modified it a bit and added a spring.

The results speak for themselves! Complete instructions (and pictures) are on my blog:

Impressive work. Will you be putting the STL up somewhere?

Lawsy! Coming from you that's a huge compliment, I'm a big fan of your work on the Solidoodle!

I'll be posting a Thingiverse derivation soon, will post link here when it's up.

Cheers!

Re: Z-axis anti-backlash upgrade

I really liked the idea with the spring.
But I think I achieved the same functionality using this rubber ring.
Since the displacement would not be that large, and I was able to use the original STL.

Re: Z-axis anti-backlash upgrade

the problem with the rubber ring , is that it didn't last for long... perhaps it didn't like hot ambiance. for me, i change two rings before i switch to a spring..

Yeah, rubber's not made to withstand force over time without compressing further - it'll creep.

Re: Z-axis anti-backlash upgrade

The tang in front stopped  x axis movement when y is all the way back.  I  moved the tang to the back and all is good.

This is really important.  I had the same problem and crashed the bed into the print head when homing.  That caused me a bunch of trouble.  I did not think of turning it around and went with a different solution.  I may have to try this one again.

Printed, installed, seems to be working great!
First test prints in progress. Thanks jamesh !

Installed the upgrade.
Just have to adjust my flowrate and then... give it a try smile

Hadn't noticed this problem... by tang you're referring to the tab right? I guess I never print that far back... Good to know!

Re: Z-axis anti-backlash upgrade

just wanted to ask. After applying the mod and looking at your pics I saw that you have alttle space between the two wood plates of the z-nut. I don't have this space. Could this become a problem? The wood is really soft.

Hmm.. Sounds like Solidoodle just varied how it was constructed -- the location of the wood doesnt really matter as long as you have the spring in contact (and compressed) between the two nuts... The wood just holds the alignment of both nuts.

Re: Z-axis anti-backlash upgrade

I tested my upgrade and I'm impressed!
Now I have to fix my Y-axis shifting and then I can print ;D

Great work! Thanks for fixing my fix that didn't actually fix... (need to go find a spring...)
