Topic: Q: Hotbed not included?? Can I get around this???

Hi,

I just unpacked the Solidoodle 3 over the weekend.

It appears my 'out of the box' printer didn't come with a hotbed?  I live in the tropics (where ambient temp is warm) but even so I am finding the APS still wont stick to the printer bed.  I'm cool with rigging something up to solve this, only I'm not sure where to start... any suggestions?  (That said, I am a little disappointed in buying a printer as plug and play but it doesnt appear to be).

Perhaps I'm have made a mistake?  See attached picture of the hotbed as it stands, to me it doesn't appear to have any way of making it 'hot'.

Thanks, Nick

Solidoodle without hotbed - wasted money.

How did you get an SD3 without a hotbed?  They don't even offer that.  Guess it goes to what I have been saying about QC.

I would contact customer service, you paid for it if an SD3.

As a side note to all, I would make an unboxing video just in case you have issues too.

unfortunately, for ABS to stick to the bed the bed has to be at least 70-80 degrees C.

That sort of temperature as an ambient temperature would probably lead to inadequate cooling of motors and kill them. of course you wouldn't actually be so bothered about the printer because in that sort of heat you'd die pretty quickly also.

Errrr, just a quick thought. Are you sure you've got an SD3 ? That print bed looks a little small.
I know from the image it is hard to tell but the Z axis rods compared to the spacing to the left/right frame look like an SD2 not a 3

Like Lotw_1 said they don't do an acrylic bed for an SD3.

Have you measured the print bed?

You want to make sure, especially if you ordered an SD3, I have seen a couple videos on youtube where the person did an unboxing and the label showed a different order number then theirs, so maybe sent you a Basic SD2 instead of a SD3.

Re: Q: Hotbed not included?? Can I get around this???

That is definitely a SD2.  Did you pay $499 or $799?  It's nice that they offer a $499 version, but it is mostly only good for publicity.  An acrylic bed is pretty much PLA only.

Re: Q: Hotbed not included?? Can I get around this???

Looks like an SD2, wire bundle is in the SD2 location not through the filament hole like they've been doing on the SD3.

If you paid $499US then you got the SD2 without the heated build platform.

Re: Q: Hotbed not included?? Can I get around this???

This is a 'Basic' model Solidoodle 2nd generation 3d printer. This particular model is the only one that we offer that does not come with a heated build platform. If you would like to purchase and upgrade package which includes the heated build platform then you can find it in the following link:

Hope this helps.
