The laser on those units is just a 5mw red laser. They are not strong enough to even blind you, much less engrave.
It is actually 0.35W 450nm laser, yes, it take long time to burn wood. but 1.5W 405nm laser head is about $20 on aliexpress, easy enough to replace. You can get 4W 445nm laser head for $130 if you are really serious about the power, but I have no problem burn wood and autoclave-able plastics with 1W 405nm laser. Did not see any hope to cut wood board and acrylic glass though.
Da Vinci 1.0 serial case and front door (Although don't close easily) are perfect for laser engrave (And yes, the front door is laser shield, perfect for family that have kids running around), not to mention the build-in LED make it easy to see the progression of engraving through the door.
Laser engrave with that drawing size (200 mm X 200 mm) with full enclosure are extremely expensive (to me at least), but half broken Da Vinci 1.0 is like $100 plus shipping.
