Topic: Leap Motion + Solidoodle = Cool Stuff

You might have seen this already, but just in case you haven't, the Leap Motion https://www.leapmotion.com/ is due to come out later this quarter, and I am really excited to get my device.  The Leap Motion is a flash-drive-sized 3D sensor for PC that has 10 micron movement sensing precision, and can track an 8-cu.-ft. volume above it.  It's $70+shipping for the pre-order available on their website.

One of the demos they talked about (but I can't find the video for) is a "virtual clay" modeling program which allows you to directly manipulate a 3D clay blob with your hands, with some amazing precision.  Furthermore, there are plenty of ways to integrate it with more geometrical design approaches such as CAD.  Not to mention, the eventual ability to exploit its unmatched resolution in directly scanning arbitrary objects.

I think it could be a great boost for 3D printing.

Wow, that would be a great modelling tool.
Anyone tryed it yet ?

Let's just hope we don't get as many destroyed screens as the Wii destroyed with the Wiimote...

Re: Leap Motion + Solidoodle = Cool Stuff

Got a Leap Motion on pre-order.  Hopefully they get it shipped out soon, but I'm not holding my breath.

Still, it would be good to do some organic modelling using traditional methods to see if it can accomplish it.

Re: Leap Motion + Solidoodle = Cool Stuff

I'm thinking about preordering, even though I probably won't be able to do much with it when it arrives.  I don't expect it would take long before a ReconstructMe equivalent shows up.    I don't know how useful it would be for CAD.  It's easy enough to spin models with the mouse, which you are already holding, and waving hands doesn't lend itself to precision.  ZBrush/Sculptris could really benefit from it though.

Re: Leap Motion + Solidoodle = Cool Stuff

I've had a one pre-ordered since July. I hope they start shipping soon. I have a lot of ideas I want to try with it.

Re: Leap Motion + Solidoodle = Cool Stuff

It's now $79.99 and to quote the website:

Pre-Order the Leap Motion Controller
Be one of the first to hold the future in your hands. We will begin shipping to consumers on May 13; shipping will be prioritized by pre-order date. We won't charge you until your Leap Motion Controller ships.

No trees were harmed in the creation of this email, though some electrons were horribly inconvenienced.

Re: Leap Motion + Solidoodle = Cool Stuff

Not exactly sure how I will use but it's affordable so I've jumped on board and pre-ordered.

8

Re: Leap Motion + Solidoodle = Cool Stuff

Yeah I ordered it too thinking id figure out a use for it later.   Stupid internet impulse buys.

Re: Leap Motion + Solidoodle = Cool Stuff

Sadly, the release has been pushed back to July 22nd.  I don't mind too much though, since they are doing it to make sure the launch product is thoroughly tested.

Re: Leap Motion + Solidoodle = Cool Stuff

Yeah I got the same email

Re: Leap Motion + Solidoodle = Cool Stuff

My lab (uni research) got a pre-release one, and it was a bit let down by it to be honest. Not sure what I was expecting, but it wasn't quite as nice to use as I had imagined - could never quite figure out the exact tracking volume, couldn't easily get point cloud data for these kind of projects. Cancelled by pre-order yesterday given the additional delay. Happy to be proven wrong though once it comes out smile It did give very accurate data at a fast rate.

Re: Leap Motion + Solidoodle = Cool Stuff

Isn't that a good thing?  Or do you mean that you could not get the data?  I have heard that they currently do not release raw data so I guess that makes sense.

Fortunately, it does seem to be in their future plans to allow more low-level access to these kinds of things.

Yep sorry really bad typo on my part :S Fixed now.

Re: Leap Motion + Solidoodle = Cool Stuff

The reality is we very likely could have hit the original ship date. But it wouldn’t have left time for comprehensive testing. This will come in the form of a beta test that will start in June. We will give the 12k developers who currently have Leap Motion controllers access to the feature complete product including OS interaction (today developers only have access to the SDK). We will also invite some people who are not developers to join the beta test.

from the update email..

so perhaps now, we can access raw data for point cloud ?

Re: Leap Motion + Solidoodle = Cool Stuff

Yes, I think eventually that is the plan.  I am not sure if it will be available on release.

Part of the problem is that the point cloud itself is interpolated by heuristic algorithms designed for specific objects, such as hands and pencils.  So for an arbitrary object, the sensor might not have enough information to accurately create a point cloud.
They discussed this at one point in a Q&A session, I think.

Re: Leap Motion + Solidoodle = Cool Stuff

Email: Your leap motion has shipped

Can't wait!

Re: Leap Motion + Solidoodle = Cool Stuff

Mine too... be here on Monday!
want to see what this thing can do... They say it supports W7, so we'll see, but I have a copy of 8 that I can use if I have to... just have to upgrade the OS of the 7 box.

Re: Leap Motion + Solidoodle = Cool Stuff

I am still waiting for my myo Glad to see some awesome tech. rolling out.

SD3 w/ mods:
Glass bed with QU-BD heat pad upgrade, threadless ballscrew w/ 8mm smooth rod, spectra line belt replacement, lawsy MK5 extruder, Lawsy replacement carriage, E3D hotend, Ramps 1.4 w/ reprap discount controller, DRV8825 drivers, 12v 30A PS, Acrylic case, Overkill Y-idlers, Filament alarm, Extruder fan + more.

Re: Leap Motion + Solidoodle = Cool Stuff

I ordered one out of impulse earlier in the year, but I have no idea what I will actually use it for.

Maybe a custom interface for flying a quadcopter?

20

Re: Leap Motion + Solidoodle = Cool Stuff

mine is also shipped big_smile

21

Re: Leap Motion + Solidoodle = Cool Stuff

Got mine yesterday... San Diego Comic-con takes precedence... so I guess tomorrow... ?

22

Re: Leap Motion + Solidoodle = Cool Stuff

Got mine today. Went to the setup page on their site and it says come back on the 22nd July.

It is the 22nd in Australia!

23

Re: Leap Motion + Solidoodle = Cool Stuff

Mine arrived Saturday and is on my desk at work, haven't had a chance to open up the package yet.

Re: Leap Motion + Solidoodle = Cool Stuff

Update, got it working but my network won't let the airspace app environment load so it'll have to be from home.  Just the calibration stuff was pretty cool though.  I could see playing with it but I'm going to have to think up an actual use for it.  Hopefully the app developers are going wild with it and something cool is already out.

25

Re: Leap Motion + Solidoodle = Cool Stuff

Okay tried it out last night at home.  I'd say it works decently but not great.  I downloaded a lot of the free apps from the "airspace" portal and some of them are fun to play around in, and I was even able to draw a picture in the corel paint app.  It'll take some getting used to.  Cut the rope game even becomes a challenge for a while until you figure out where to position your finger front to back to actually swipe.

I'm going to wait for some reviews of the paid apps before I start buying them because at $5 each for an app that doesn't do much you could waste a decent chunk trying to find a good one.

Anyone else get it going?
