Hi,
I just received my LAYWOO-D3 / 1.75 mm wire.
I tried to use it instead of my PLA and print a frog i used to do in PLA. I even used the same gcode
I get into some trouble i relate below :

it seems that the wire is not seamlessly used by the nozzle. It begin the layer, then when he move to another part of the print the wire continue to go out (oozle) and after few seconds, the wire stop to go out while the printer continue to print (with nothing) then it goes out again for a layer or half of it then nothing again and again.

it seems that the retract is useless and extrusion not working fine.
it even stop pushing the filament in the noozle and I had to clean up wire.

Has somebody tried to use that new filament with it's sd2 and what parameter did you used ?

It seems according to forum That i need a .5mm nozzle ?
where can i get one ?
what impact on printing quality ?

makergear.com has compatible nozzles. You can also check out forums at reprap, the google groups for Makerbot, Ultimaker, Makergear etc. Other printer users are trying Laywood, so you can learn from their experiences as well. Keep in mind that when one of them says 230 celsius, that equates to 195-200 for the Solidoodle.

So we can't print Laywood with our standard 0.35 mm nozzles?

I tried and it was not successfull the nozzle don't manage correctly this material (Laywood). i plan buying .5 nozzle because i like this material.

@Ian, are you sure makergear.com nozzle are compatible with SD2 ? makergear guy are not sure. they asked me that : Does the SD2 use a Prusa or Wade mount-compatible extruder?

The Solidoodle used a Makergear hot end originally. It's a little different now, but they only changed the nichrome wire heater to a heater made from an aluminum block with a resistor inside. The groovemount (black part) the brass barrel and nozzle are still the makergear design.

So I can by the .5mm nozzle, remove my .35, put the heat sensor with kapton tape on .5 and put it in. Am I right ?

Good to know that it's maker gear design! Too bad I won't ever get that damn nozzle off the brass barrel.

Yes. It's a good idea to order some 1/4" kapton if you haven't already. Its very handy to have around. Also you might consider printing the Mk4 extruder to make it easier to get the hot end out if you can't get the nozzle unscrewed while it is in the printer. If you heat it up first to melt the plastic it shouldn't be a problem.

I don't understand what you say about the Mk4 extruder print. Where can I find the stl and why doing so ? i can't just change the nozzle easily ?

I still don't understand why using a MK4 extruder just for changing the nozzle ?
does it works with SD2 nozzle support.
MK4 is not sold it is MKV now.

It makes a nozzle change take about 10 seconds. If your are going to be using different nozzles then it saves some time.

So to use MK4, I need to
-buy a Nozzle holder for Mk IV hot-end,
- a .5mm nozzle,
- 1/4" kapton tape,
and print the mk IV extruder
then mount everything !!

If I just want to keep the .5mm nozzle i just need to buy it and mount it instead of the original one.

You don't need to buy anything. I just recommended printing out this extruder - http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:47561/ to replace the acrylic because if you need to get the hot end out to replace the nozzle, it is a lot easier with the printed version. It still holds the Solidoodle hot end, there is no need to buy a new one. If you want to switch nozzles a lot, then it makes sense to buy a new hot end so you can have one hot end with a .35 nozzle and one hot end with a .5 nozzle. It is a lot easier to swap hot ends than to always be unscrewing the nozzles.

I print in PLA it is OK ?
how do I manage the T° heat tester ? I have to tape it at each change ?

PLA can soften from 50 degrees up. Holding a 200 degree extruder (even though the PEEK will be cooler than this) won't be successful.

Anyone with a 3D printer in Paris can make you those parts. But buying a small amount of ABS is a good route to go.

So ... I just ordered 4 x 250g of Laywood-D3 1.75mm. Should I get a 0.5mm j-head for it or will a 0.35 nozzle print it too? Any definitive info?

The .35 nozzle might clog. The .5 nozzles from Makergear are only about $5 and screw on to the stock SD hot end. You don't need to buy another hot end unless you don't want to bother with unscrewing the nozzle.
