Topic: Controlling Solidoodle from Android

Anybody have any experience with this?:

http://makemendel.com/android

It's an android app that works in conjunction with an On-the-go cable that allows an Android device to work as a USB host.  If it works, with cheap Android devices below the $100 mark, I'm tempted to try this as a simple alternative to a Panelolu.

Re: Controlling Solidoodle from Android

I like the idea, I wish I had an Android device to try it. What I've been using is my iPad with an app called Air Display to display what's  on the computer on my iPad and control it through the touch screen.

Re: Controlling Solidoodle from Android

I'll give this a shot. I got a old galaxy nexus and my nexus 7.  I hear sometime on-the-go cables can be finicky from model to model.  I did some research and it appears that this dirt cheap one will work with the nexus 7. I want to give this a shot!

Tried it this morning - although it connect, the app crashes every 2 seconds with the SD connected. Doesn't work yet

Wonder if this guy will get the job done.

Re: Controlling Solidoodle from Android

are you just trying to get remote functionality, or are you looking to push the envelope by using Android?

Remote control is easy:  teamviewer works perfectly.

Not interested in remote controlling; just want to use an android device as a small dedicated controller I can mount to the printer so my PC can be freed for other tasks.

Right now, the PC has to stay tethered to the printer which is a pain, and there is always a risk of USB cable coming loose or the PC crashing from something else I am doing.  Also, a touchscreen would be much more convenient, and the whole setup would be much more portable without the PC.  I know you can get some of this with a panelolu, but it seems like an Android solution could have a better interface and display, and would be very attractive, especially with off-brand android tablets running about $80,

You can get small footprint dual core windows machines for less an $200 refurbished.  I know it isn't as cheap and you still need a monitor, but you could use a KVM switchbox like I do for my multiple macs.

Thanks, but I really want something small and self contained with a touchscreen so I can mount it to the printer itself.  I have some older laptops I could use, but they would still be too big.  I added a steel carrying handle to my printer, so I want to be able to easily lug a whole working system from room to room in one hand.   A small android tablet is cheap, has a touchscreen, and doesn't require much power, so it might be ideal if only the software were more stable.  Alas, there's always panelolu.

With Windows, I can remote into the computer that is controlling my printers from my main computer.  No need for either a keyboard or a monitor on the printer control computer.

Re: Controlling Solidoodle from Android

Have you looked into using a Raspberry Pi?  I know the Repetier has a server edition that I believe is web based.  You just enter the IP of the Raspberry Pi into your browser and can control it from there.  I hope to eventually get around to trying this.

Re: Controlling Solidoodle from Android

I want to use a droid because I have one laying around and I am sure others do as well.  I take my printer to 3d meetups and such and I think it would be pretty sweet to just pull up a gcode file from my dropbox (stl would be amazing) and hit print on a phone.

Of course I don't need to print from a droid, I want to.

rPi still needs a power outlet and a wifi dongle.  A droid is a pocket based fully contained solution.

i will try this :

i will test it with my asus transformer..

edit: pff don't know how to make the apk...

Re: Controlling Solidoodle from Android

Any updates on these? It's really useful if we can use an android on solidoodle instead of tethering a laptop for hours of printing.

Re: Controlling Solidoodle from Android

I will try the first one with the compiled apk and report my findings.

Re: Controlling Solidoodle from Android

I just searched the Google Play store and found this (have not tried it):

https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta … torprinter

(looks like it first showed up 2 days ago).

Re: Controlling Solidoodle from Android

Now all we need is the ability to mount the android tablet so the rear camera is pointing to a known view of the bed and have the simulated build compared to the real build so it can stop it automatically when things go wrong :-).

that would be ridiculous. Ridiculously awesome! I am sure my earlier prints would trip the auto stop even when things when "right".

SD3 w/ mods:
Glass bed with QU-BD heat pad upgrade, threadless ballscrew w/ 8mm smooth rod, spectra line belt replacement, lawsy MK5 extruder, Lawsy replacement carriage, E3D hotend, Ramps 1.4 w/ reprap discount controller, DRV8825 drivers, 12v 30A PS, Acrylic case, Overkill Y-idlers, Filament alarm, Extruder fan + more.

I just tried the free version on my 2013 Nexus 7 tablet, and it seems to be able to talk fine. I could use the manual controls to move the print head around, home it, etc. Don't know how well the connection holds up for a long print (or how well the battery holds up since you'd probably have to disable all sleep functions to keep it going, but I suppose it might be able to use the wireless charging to keep it going).

Does anyone have the APK file for it?  It shows up in the google play store on my Note 2 but will not show up on my Toshiba Thrive tablet.  I don't really want to tie up my phone to print... if the app really works out.

Edit... Well, tried downloading it onto my Verizon Note and I keep getting an error code.  Guess I won't be trying it at all until I can find an apk.

Re: Controlling Solidoodle from Android

I will test this on a cheap pengpad 7" tablet in the next week or so. It looks promising.

What is your Android version?  The app takes Android 4.0 and up.

Re: Controlling Solidoodle from Android

Got it to download on my phone last night. My tablet OS is a 3.0. They discontinued support on it, apparently.  Trying to find an update for it. Makes me mad. That tablet wasnt cheap.  Got it when it first came out and Toshiba just tossed it to the side, it seems.

Unless you have a google branded Nexus device, you are highly unlikely to get android updates. No one wants to be bothered. Google tried to get some industry wide initiative going for regular updates, and had lots of people sign up with great fanfare, but actual updates to non-Nexus devices are still pretty rare (they have happened sometimes). It will be interesting to see if the new Moto phones get updates since google owns them now.

Re: Controlling Solidoodle from Android

This printer UI also seems to be based off of android, although it takes a more integrated approach to printing:

However, I couldn't seem to find any more information about the project besides the video and comments.
