Topic: SD2 No Heat - SSR went south?

I have an SD2 that has been modded with s SuperNight PS & a SSR to control the heat to an aftermarket heat element.  I followed Wards plan & installed it a year/14 months ago.  Been working great, heats from room temp to 97C in ~ 3 min.  Today, it got to 61C and started to cool off.  Checked & replugged all connections - same.  Got the meter out and found 12V from the motherboard & 12V from the PS - 0V on the output side of the SSR.  The LED on the relay is red indicating, I think, overheating.  It's been bolted to the SD frame and hasn't given any probs in over a year.

Think maybe the relay has bit the dust?

Just noticed red LED comes on immediately with power.  Label reads On - Green; Oh - Red.  I assume Oh is Overheat?

Do you have 12 volts on terminal 2 of the relay? Id so then your relay has died.. That is a Fotek relay which I work with a lot in my line business. There also many counterfeits out there where they buy relays with lower specs then relabel them to higher specs. You might have got a hold of one of those and have been over driving it thinking all was good.

Thanx for the response Carl.  I do have 12V on term 2 of the relay - comes directly from the ps.  I don't know the useable life of these relays, but I've used the h3ll out of it for over a year.  I see on Ebay they go for ~9 - 10.  If I recall, I spent a lot more than 10 when I got this one.

Consider it a consumable.. I'll order another today.  Let ya know how it works is a week or so.

Yeah DC to DC SSR's fail regularly.  Go for one that is way over rated if you can.

Re: SD2 No Heat - SSR went south?

Well... I installed the new SSR and have exactly the same problem.  12V input from the MB, 12V from the PS, but 0V out from the SSR.  I get 4.8 - 5 ohms across the heating element.
What next?  I'm at a loss.  The LED comes on in the new SSR so I believe it's working OK.  I think there would be 12V at the output of the SSR even if the heat pad was kaput - no?

Not if the heat pad is shorted.. If it was shorted and you are using ground as a reference then you will get no voltage on the SSR output.

Re: SD2 No Heat - SSR went south?

I think the heat pad is toast.  I was trying to read voltage across the output - pins 1 & 2 - they are both positive (doh).  From the ps to pin 1 & 2 reads 12V, but the pad reads ambient.  I should have realized earlier - RH is showing voltage going to the pad with no temp change.
I searched for a 3 hole 150mm sq pad - no go.  Should have bought more than 1 when I got this one.  I think I have devised a way to mount a solid pad.  I have another undrilled piece of flat aluminum.  I can make some mounts to sandwich a new pad between the original bed and the second piece.
After hooking the pad directly to 12V with no temp change, I think this one is bad.
Suggestions?  Or should I just replace the pad?

What's the resistance of the heated bed, not connected to anything else?

Re: SD2 No Heat - SSR went south?

Strange - yesterday I got 4.8 - 5 ohms.  Today, just now, I get 528...

cracked trace ? loose / cold solder connection??.

Also best practice to use clip on connections with wires. I think most of us have used the quick and easy finger clip method . But wet sweaty hands can easily give false readings, DAMHIKT
