Topic: NOOOOO, SD3 arrives broken

Well, I had hoped to do a formal introduction and show off my new SD3, but I guess that wont get to happen like I had planned.  The wood support for the bed arrived cracked and sagging.  I just emailed support and will wait on a response...in the mean time I guess I will design the case, and plan out a metal support structure for the bed.  I dont want to join the group of people complaining...but...I have to vent some where!

Re: NOOOOO, SD3 arrives broken

I'm very tempted to try to fix this right now but am not sure thats a good idea. I would love to get any advice.  I'm not concerned about my ability to fix it, just the complication with dealing with solidoodle on the matter.

Re: NOOOOO, SD3 arrives broken

They will probably send you replacement parts for whatever is broken so that you can fix it.

Re: NOOOOO, SD3 arrives broken

Thats what I figured...if thats the case, I might as well try fixing the broken piece...

Glue it.

Re: NOOOOO, SD3 arrives broken

i'm in the same boat with you toolbox my SD3 arrived to day and the entire build platform was broken off!!! I can't even glue mine back together sad

Re: NOOOOO, SD3 arrives broken

I'm sorry you ran in to the same problem Sickma, it seems the larger platform size is just a little too much for the plywood. As for myself, I couldnt just waste the night away, so I made my repairs and have been trying to print. I took apart the whole Z access assembly, used some super glue and clamped the piece down.  I then took some brass strip and screwed it in to either side as added support. Now If I could only get my prints to stick to the bed...

Re: NOOOOO, SD3 arrives broken

Hey Toolbox and Sickma, I am curious... did you guys order your SD with a spool of filament and if so was it packed inside the printer under the bed also?I am just wondering why these broke smile

Also Toolbox, what have you tried to clean the bed with so far?

Re: NOOOOO, SD3 arrives broken

Hi ronsii, I did recieve my printer with a spool of filament and it did appear to be loose at the bottom of the printer, so yah, that could have been it.  All I did was brush off the bed, after some adjusting, I did manage to print one thing with moderate success.

Re: NOOOOO, SD3 arrives broken

Ok, you will probably have to clean the bed surface with at least rubbing alcohol or dish soap that should help the ABS to stick better as I have found it doesn't take much in the way of fingerprints or any other 'dirt' to make the plastic not stick, I have actually found that cleaning the bed with acetone works the best but if you don't have acetone available either of the others will work smile  If you are still having problems with the part not sticking or coming off during a print you may have to change some setting in slic3r like turning on brim and slowing the first layer speed down about 50 percent... sometime it is just the design of a part that will make it problematic, but for every problem there is a solution ... right smile

This now makes me very worried about mine when they ship it out, since i also ordered filament with it, two rolls.

Re: NOOOOO, SD3 arrives broken

Hi as well Ronsii, i also ordered a 2bl spool with mine now i could not tell the placement the spool originally was in mine, but it arrived on top to next to the build platform

That is a bad location to find it.  Too many hard hits above the platform could break the platform or damage the extruder.  They really need to work on packaging.  Maybe have some QA checking in final packaging to make sure everything is included and packed right, then ship it.  Now just throw things into the box and ship.  If you goto youtube and watch some unboxing, almost all are missing something.  Mainly the filemant holder pieces.  The z axis should always be lowered and anything included should be taped or strapped down below it.

Re: NOOOOO, SD3 arrives broken

Personally I don't think they should include rolls of filament in the printer box above or below the bed platform as it is NOT designed to that kind of weight and certainly not that amount of weight in transit! I understand that it saves on shipping costs but at the risk of breaking the printer...now if it were fastened(screwed) down so it were acting as part of the printer then it might be safe but with all the impacts and vibrations caused from shipping it is just a matter of time before something that is taped or stretchwrapped inside the printer comes loose and starts bouncing around like a wrecking ball.

Re: NOOOOO, SD3 arrives broken

What's funny was that the packing directions they had showed a spool taped down to the bottom of the printer under the Z access platform.  Though I did not see any sign of tape there, just the bubble rap and foam.  Even the plastic bag witht he pvc pipe was open with stuff falling out.

I recieved my reply back from Solidoodle who said I could repair it, disasemble the part and send it back, or send back the entire thing for repair.
Obviously I didnt want to wait another month and repaired it myself.  However, that does not mean I dont want to be compensated for my inconvience. I plan on having a new part machined out of aluminum as I think the wood was a poor choice for such a long cantaliever.  I will be curious to see what they say in response...

Re: NOOOOO, SD3 arrives broken

Maybe whoever was packing yours thought it didn't need the tape and just put the spool in and lowered the bed???

Re: NOOOOO, SD3 arrives broken

There was about a 2 inch gap between the spool and bed. Given the way it was cracked, I'm not even sure the spool could have been the issue.  It looked like the force came from the top, not the bottom where the spool was.

Re: NOOOOO, SD3 arrives broken

These reasons is why i suggest SD doing better QA on packaging.  These problems are bad for customers, who will think or never purchase from them again and costly to fix the broken printer.  Look up unboxing videos on youtube and you will see quite a few with missing parts, ie: filament holder pieces, open bags with stuff moving around, nothing really secure from movement.  Their new packaging only help with hard hits on the frame, the guts get destroyed by lack of stuff inside.

Re: NOOOOO, SD3 arrives broken

I had the same issue, SD told me to glue it and I didn't think that would help so I dug through my guitar parts and used a tuning peg setup and made a support cable and it's running fairly well now...

Re: NOOOOO, SD3 arrives broken

Just realised my bed has the same problem.  When i first got the printer, I had to adjust the bed levelling screws at the front all the way up to make it flat. Thought that was normal.

On closer inspection, there's a crack running along the wood bed support causing the droop.

How responsive were solidoodle on this issue?

Re: NOOOOO, SD3 arrives broken

Received my SD3 on Monday.  Luckly I ordered two rolls of filiment and they shipped seperatly.  The green bag inside, however, was open and some pieces were loose in carton, no damage apparenty though.  Sorry about your issue, hope you get it resloved.
