Topic: New, updated "Getting Started" for S3?

Hey Guys.

So forgive my daftness, but I need a little help getting my new S3 operational. I have Repetier-Host, slic3r, Python 2.7.3, unicode support, and the Arduino drivers installed as detailed in the original getting started wiki page.

From there, the next step is to install the filament, which I'm having trouble figuring out how to do. Let's just say there are a lot of screws on this thing. Haha!! If someone can put up a picture tutorial or something, or link to a place I'm missing, that would be very much appreciated.

The next thing is to slice up the model using Skienforge accessed through Pronterface. But the getting started page says S3 users cannot use Pronterface at the moment. So I'm at a loss of where to go next.

My S3 has its lights on and the fan is running, so I know it's at least reactive in that sense.

Could someone please point me in the right direction? Thanks!! :]

Right on their webpage, under "how to install filament":

Repetier's self explanatory, if you have a specific question, ask away.

I'm not currently using Pronterface with my S3, which makes following those directions rather difficult.

I load the gcode into Repetier and then hit Run Job, and then I get an ETA print time of 26min and 30 sec, but the printer doesn't start and I don't see either the nozzle OR print bed gaining temperature. Am I missing a step?

hi drac i have mine and i think i can help

first you have to cnnect the printer in repetier
then go to the manual tab and set the extruder to on and let it warm up remain on that page.alot of this is being covered here

In printer settings you need to set the com port the printer is on and hit "connect" if you haven't already.  Do the manual controls move the extruder around?

Re: New, updated "Getting Started" for S3?

I'm quite certain that I have the right ports selected and the printer responds when I hit connect (slight humming), but that's it. The manual controls don't respond. I load a test stl, press the "Heat Extruder" and "Heat Printbed" options so they're light blue, then press "ok" a couple times and then it says Heating Extruder at the top, but I don't see the temperature climbing.

Are the temperatures reported for the bed and hot end equal to the ambient temp of the room?  If you wrap a hand around the nozzle, does it show the temperature increasing, or do the temps change when it connects?

If the temps aren't reading then its not connected.  If it is connected then there is some one of power issue, though it would be odd for the fan to be running but no motors responding if you hit the home buttons.

Re: New, updated "Getting Started" for S3?

For the record Ian, I really appreciate your help.

Yeah, Like I said, the lights and the fan are working, and the S3 hums and responds when I hit the connect button. The extruder reads as 0 degrees and it doesn't change when I wrap my hands around it. It says at the bottom this, however:

Connected Extruder: 0.00 degress C/OFF

So it MIGHT be that the nozzle is off. But I don't know how to turn either that or the print bed on...?

For the record, I don't know how much help this will be, but here's a screenshot of what my window looks like:

When you hit connect, what happens at the bottom of the screen in the log?  Does it show a bunch of info about the firmware?  0 for both temps shows that it isn't receiving anything, and its not sending either.   RH can sometimes give the green light on the connect button when it isn't connected.  Usually if you power the printer on and off or unplug the USB while RH is open.   If the com port is correct (check device manager) and the baud rate is 250,000 try quitting RH and starting it again.

Re: New, updated "Getting Started" for S3?

Yeah, I'm not sure WHAT's going on. Just for testing purposes, I powered off the printer, hit connect, and it was still read as connected with many of the readings I was getting before. I've included another capture of the log; this is what I get when I simply open RH and press CONNECT.

For the record, however, earlier today, I-WAS- able to heat the extruder and start a print, but the print bed didn't heat up (it never started), so of course the ABS didn't stick and I killed the job. That was the only instance today it worked. ("worked").

Re: New, updated "Getting Started" for S3?

My guess is it's an issue with the connection, but I just DON'T KNOW what it is that I need to fix. I double-checked on device manager that my printer's conected to Comm4, reflected this in the printer settings, and the baud rate is definitely 250000

Re: New, updated "Getting Started" for S3?

It's definitely connected, because it's reading the settings that are in firmware.  It will connect when the power is off because the board is powered by USB, and AC runs the motors and heaters.  Do any MINTEMP errors come up when you try to do anything?  If the thermistors aren't reading, it would keep the printer shut down to prevent overheating.  However it also throws errors.  I don't know why you would be getting 0 temp readings when it is connected without it complaining about disconnected thermistors.

What happens if you disconnect the connector for the thermistor at the extruder?  I don't know what color it is on the new hot ends, but it might lead to a thin, gray wire.

Re: New, updated "Getting Started" for S3?

I did get this aspect to work finally, and now I need to get a pesky piece of filament out of the way. I sent you a PM asking about it. Thank you for all your help!!

(by the way, if it's any benefit to anyone reading this, I just deleted the printer setting and just made a new one)
