Those motors have far more torque than is needed, most Pololu style stepper drivers can't do 2 amps anyway. 0.6 amps or so would be plenty on that setup.

Also this:

The motors have twice the step accuracy of a typical motor.

is pretty silly, these are 1.8deg motors, which is standard.

These will go to 2A

I was also looking at this
lighter and smaller with the same 1A current

I like amazon because I can get my printer back up in a few days

Re: E3D Titan extruder

Maybe for a few seconds. There isn't enough thermal sinking on that PCB to do 2A continuous.

Thanks, what about the other motor in my last post. Will that work? I will save those drivers for when I burn up my main board and switch to RAMPS ;-)

Re: E3D Titan extruder

Yes, that's the same motor that Livi uses.

Cool, I will give that a try.

Re: E3D Titan extruder

That was equally entertaining.

Thanks again for showing us what NOT to do, I'll be extra careful when I get that puppy off!

I'm sorry that happened.  I wanted to see the rest where you fry the motor!

I'm make sure the gear is DOWN when I do mine!

Here you go, at this point I knew I wasn't getting it off but I must persist.....LOL

Would it be possible to get the gear off the stepper with a heat gun or does it need more heat than that ?

Re: E3D Titan extruder

@elmort.

1.8 is the commonly used as the standard for use in 3d printers but 3.6 degree per step is also a standard and it could also be argued that that is the standard since it is the most commonly manufactured.

You can also get  0.9 degree per step motors

So there statement it is twice the accuracy of the standard stepper motor is accurate if you are comparing it to a 3.6 degree per step stepper motor.

Granted they did not really explain that so it is kind of misleading.

Re: E3D Titan extruder

I can try it for you scobo but I don't think it will get hot enough I still have the gear on my davinci stepper motor

I dont think it would work with a hot air gun,

I am very sorry the gear removing as cause you guys so much trouble/hassle

161

Re: E3D Titan extruder

the hot air gun did not ever make it get hot enf to drop off

Re: E3D Titan extruder

Ok, thanks for trying. This is my only concern about the mod.
I guess another option would be to buy another stepper.

Once my wife wakes, I'm going to make a vid of removing the gear. I really am sorry this is causing you guys so much trouble. Another way, but this would leave the gear scrap. Is to dremel the gear. But this would need I think a great deal of time and patience, also the gear would be destroyed.

Regards

Re: E3D Titan extruder

Yeah, someone on the Voltivo forum cut it off with a dremel. Bit drastic though.
Don't worry about it Stuart, it's not a deal breaker for me.
I'll find some way of getting it off. I just don't own a butane torch at the moment.

Do you know any very handy DIY guy or a plumber?

Unfortunately not.
How about holding the stepper upside down or sideways with the gear directly over the flame from a gas stove/hob ?

Re: E3D Titan extruder

you can press it off as well using a gear puller

and a propane torch is only 12 dollars at a hardware store. (well here in the US any way)
so a torch is les expensive then a heat gun

Yeah, someone on Voltivo used one of those. I don't have one of those either unfortunately.
Looks like I'd either have to buy a cheap butane torch or another stepper.
A new stepper wouldn't be a bad idea actually. You could easily switch back to the stock extruder if need be.

Won't work or even be hot enough

Thanks for the offer Stuart, I'll keep it in mind.
I'm leaning towards buying another stepper, once I eventually get round to buying a Titan and doing the mod. Not had much time for anything like this recently.

Re: E3D Titan extruder

This may help identify the colour coding on a stepper motor, they just need to be organised in the same groups. A & A-, B & B- http://soliforum.com/i/?gyX9n2M.jpg

The XYZ wiring as already been identified as

http://soliforum.com/i/?8tItXVs.jpg

As you see it corresponded to bipolar drive series, but the polarity is reversed.

Looking at the Stepper Motor wiring diagram for the one your considering (17HS2408) the 4 lead wiring code is
http://soliforum.com/i/?UD9A6DN.jpg

Black        A
Green       -A

Red.         B
Blue.        -B

So for the Da Vinci Wiring code PINS 1 - 6

1.             Green (-A)
2.
3.             Black (A)
4.             Blue (-B)
5.
6.             Red (B)

I should say thank you for asking these queries, as you have made me research and now understand stepper motors. CHEERS

Re: E3D Titan extruder

Ok, there is a problem, unless I assembled wrong. The way the assembly sits in the carriage now, only one bolt goes through the carriage. The bottom left is secured through the carriage and motor but the bottom right does not. Because of this it shifts. I am going back to review my assembly.

This only seems to apply if you had already drilled out for the e3d, did I print out the wrong mount?

You have certainly done something wrong. I have three bolts going Into the stepper, top-left, top-right, bottom-left. The Bottom right is the short bolt. Only goes into the captive nut within the Titan body.
