Topic: ABS + Copper and ABS + Iron filament production

Lots of folks have asked if it is possible to replicate Copper-filled and Iron-filled filaments with a Filastruder. Turns out the answer is yes!

Here's a teaser photo from the paper, copper filled ABS:

Re: ABS + Copper and ABS + Iron filament production

Does the increased thermal conductivity smooth the temperature gradiants that cause warping?

I wonder if vapor-smoothing metal-filled ABS would shorten the process of making the prints look like metal.  And with all of the metal filled filaments out there, why has no one offered ABS?  I'm guessing they avoid it because ABS is less popular due to warping, but if it turns out that the filling reduces warping, and makes finishing easier, it might be worth it to someone to pursue making it commercially.

I would guess that metal filled ABS isn't a thing because by making it PLA based they increase printer compatibility. Most of Printrbot's machines don't even have heated beds, much less enclosures.

I don't think a 50% bump in thermal conductivity will fix ABS's warping, but it wouldn't hurt.

Thanks for sharing this! I'm working on a research project right now on something very similar, and this helps a lot. Pretty cool smile
