Topic: pulsating extruder?

I'm trying to calibrate my e3d and it seems to pulsate regularly, making patterned walls of varying thicknesses.  I also recently did a PSU upgrade and firmware update.  I don't see this problem in various print troubleshooting websites.  See picture:

SD2 Sanguinololu 1.3a atmega1284p, wood platform, lawsy's carriages, braided fishing line, pallet wood overhead spool mount, carboard/magnet enclosure, glass bed, E3D v6, bed levelling knobs, extended z-stop, 25A DC-DC SSR for bed heater, everything fixed to the SD2 frame, marlin firmware with some adjustments and extra failsafes enabled.  I'll never give up on you, little printer that could(n't)!

Look up motor moire, that is the cause of this and is usually a sign your vref for your extruder stepper is set wrong.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

Re: pulsating extruder?

Thanks, I adjusted the pot dial on the stepper until I could find the best spot.  It's better but it doesn't quite go away.  Is there a better stepper to be had?

DRV8825 for 1/32 microsteps or a .9 stepper motor. Or a HobGoblin will help with Moiré

ordered a DRV8825.  are they not all 1/32 microsteps?

Re: pulsating extruder?

A4988 is 1/16, DRV8825 is 1/32.
+1 to wardjr on the Goblin. With a DRV8825 and the Hobb Goblin, a .9 motor can be overkill, though I love that setup.

Re: pulsating extruder?

If you are getting moire with an 8825 then you most likely aren't running it at 1/32 steps.  Did you set the jumpers correctly? Did you have to double your E:steps/mm?

Re: pulsating extruder?

I don't have the 8825 yet, but your comment about jumpers and doubling extruder steps/mm has been noted for when the part is delivered next week.

Re: pulsating extruder?

For the record, swapping an atmega644p for atmega1284p did not fix this (I happened to be doing that anyway)

I installed the 1/32 stepper driver drv8825, did some calibration of the trimpot until the extruder motor stopped choking and now the moire is gone!  Thanks all.
