Topic: Davinci Duo HIPS getting stuck in nozzle

I have been printing with HIPS for a few days and now I am getting problems. I am using the left extruder with HIPS at 230-240C and after a while the nozzle gets plugged, HARD. I have had three times now to completely dissasemble the head and drill out the stuck filament. I measured the stuck part to swell to about 2 mm from 1.75mm and it does not slide anymore.

Is this because of the shitty XYZ head that does not have a teflon sleeve ? I have a few extra radiators, but seems the heat creep is the culprit. If I print ABS only, no issue.

Should I lower the temp to 220C and try again ?

Did anyone print with HIPS with the original Davinci Duo head ?

Thanks.

I lowered the temperature on both extruders to 220C, seems to be doing better.

Re: Davinci Duo HIPS getting stuck in nozzle

I believe something is screwed up in the left head of the Duo. No matter how much I clean it (I completely dissasembled it, including the heater block and heat pipe) it gets blocked after a while. I will replace it temporarily with a new spare I have to test if the same happens with various filaments (ABS, HIPS, Cicoloy home made crap) with temps between 220-240C.

The filament swells in the pipe (as if the temp was too high) and then I have to dissasemble it, take the pipe apart, drill the filament out (will not slide out), clean the inside of the heater block and drill the nozzle with a .4 mm drill. Very weird. I checked if there may be scratches on the inside of the heat pipe or debris, but all looks fine. I am thinking to hook up a 12V source to the old heater block to be able to clean it better when it would be at about 230C, maybe there is cooked plastic inside that I cannot see.

But what I really want is a more modular, teflon insulated head as the MK8, eventually replacing both heads.

Re: Davinci Duo HIPS getting stuck in nozzle

I have been printing with HIPS on my version 1.0. Since I'm making the filament it's only 1.65mm, so has given me no issue's.

Since you mentioned some of the filament your using is "home made" you might want to see if undersizing would fix your issue. I'm currently printing with Craftware most of the time, but any non stock slicer would let you set the filament size as you wish, so printing with a slightly smaller filament is not a problem.

Re: Davinci Duo HIPS getting stuck in nozzle

So far seems the head is the issue. Replaced and seems to work well.
