Topic: USB connection not working

I am in the process of upgrading my extruders to E3D. I really appreciate all the help I have received so far from this forum on my extruder upgrade.

I have built the new extruders, but not attached them to the cable harness yet, however, I did remove one of the old extruders.  I did not have the printer powered up while doing this work.
While studying the cabling, I did remove the clear plate over the controller board, and replaced it.
At this point in my operations, the USB connection to my host stopped working. I have rebooted my computer, and power cycled the printer in various combinations.  The computer does not make any noises when plugging and unplugging the printer.  Also there is no change in the device manager list.
As a control, I used the same USB cable with a different USB serial device that I have, and it connects and disconnects properly, so I know the USB port on the computer side is working, and the cable is fine.
I have also tried plugging the printer into another computer, and it is still not recognized as a USB device.

Re: USB connection not working

Buy a Rumba wink
Seriously all you can do is look around for a short or something that seems out of place.  That board should connect to your PC Without power or anything else plugged into the board.  So that gives you something to start with.

Re: USB connection not working

Thanks again for the help in this forum.

OK, I think the board is not going to recover.  So I guess it's Rumba for me.  Who should I buy it from, and where can I find instructions for setting it up for my workbench?

Thanks in advance for the help.

if you are in the US, buy here: http://www.makerfarm.com/index.php/prin … board.html
(note: you will need to add stepper drivers x4, and add the USB cable - it is a mini B type)

Re: USB connection not working

Heartless will probably be your best source of info for install on that particular printer.  The Rumba is super robust and easy to install and flash.  Plenty of us here to step you through it all.  You should consider picking up at least 2 DRV8825's for 1/32 stepping on the extruders.  Let us know how we can help.

Re: USB connection not working

Since it a workbench with dual extruders, don't I need 5 stepper drivers?

Re: USB connection not working

Rumba will handle 3 extruders so yes you will need to buy 5 stepper drivers.  I like the DRV8825's but they are more expensive and X,Y&Z won't benefit from 1/32.  But 1/32 on your extruders will eliminate Moire and be generally easier to tune the VREF.  You can use 4988's for X,Y&Z axis as they only run up to 1/16.  or you can use 8825's for all of them (as I do) and just set the jumpers for 1/16 steps on the X,Y &Z.  It's just a matter of budget really.  The 8825's will take a lot more abuse and heat than the 4988's.

Re: USB connection not working

Tips:
Avoid GEtech drivers
Don't power the board with drivers installed unless the motors are wired up also.

Re: USB connection not working

You guys are awesome!
Maker Farm doesn't seem to sell DRV8825 is a 5 pack, so I guess I need to buy the extra one somewhere else.  I have only received Maker Farm as a suggested vender.  Any other places I should shop?

Re: USB connection not working

I got my order in the cart, and it looks like I will need to by an extra 4988, because you have to buy 4 steppers with the board.  If I had ordered yesterday, I could have gotten 20% off, but now the code is expired. Before Iplace this order, does anyone know if there are new coupons available?

Here is a video of an artwork I'm working on that I used a 3D print on before I started having problems with my printer.

Re: USB connection not working

They said they don't use coupon codes. so I just went ahead and placed the order.  I got the board, usb cable, 4x 4988, and 2x 8825. about $150.  So thats about $300 in hardware upgrade/repair so far on my $1300 printer.  This is getting expensive.

Thanks again for the help.  I'm looking forward to getting it up and running again. Luckily I printed the new mounts before everything went south.

Re: USB connection not working

yup, once you get it all installed, flashed and tuned in you wont be sorry.

I put a Rumba on my 1st SD4 and love it - it is my most reliable, most accurate machine out of 4 printers.

as for the cost invested so far - just remind yourself that there are those that spend a whole lot more than you have for a closed source, difficult to upgrade & tweak machine that has major extruder problems - not naming names, but I bet you can guess. wink

Does it start with an M?

I am putting an Azteeg X5 mini on my Kossell. The RAMPS bit the dust and after some reading found out the X5 is optimized for use on a Delta.

Hey Heartless, not to derail or change topics but do you have an STL for the adjustable sliders yoy made for you FT Kossell? I want to add them to mine to help adjust flatness calibration better. If you could, PM it so we don't change this topic further.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

Re: USB connection not working

LOL, yes it does wink

I would be interested in hearing how the Azteeg works out for you, Carl (and you have a PM)

Back on topic - the nice thing about the SD's is that they are soooo easy to modify once you learn the basics of the machine. They have (had) a good platform, just the implementation was a bit lacking...

I would love to get my hands on a workbench. Oh the things I could do with/to it! LOL big_smile maybe one of these days...

Re: USB connection not working

For a while, yes.  The Rumba will take up to 36v so you'll have options moving forward.  A good Supernight 12v PSU can be adjusted up to about 14.5 volts.  This can seriously improve heat up times.  So id start with your stock PSU and then when you want a little upgrade you can grab a new PSU.

Re: USB connection not working

the Supernight PSU that wardjr mentioned is a great additional upgrade and can be had fairly cheaply..

Re: USB connection not working

The Rumba will arrive today!

I have the extruders mostly assembled, and have the new mounts printed.
I plan to use the existing power supply, which I assume I only need to cut the connector off and strip the wires.
I have a multimeter, and plenty of wiring experience.
The old controller is dead, so I can't use it.

Any links to setup documentation for my Solidoodle Workbench, driving E3D extruders will be greatly appreciated.

Re: USB connection not working

Do you know your way around Marlin, primarily the configuration.h?
Go through and set it up for your machine (dimensions, no. of extruders, max temps) those sort of things.  Then are you planning on utilizing auto level? I recommend manually leveling.
Flashing the Rumba is super simple.  Once changes are made just Save>Verify>hit reset on board and click upload.
The endstop logic is the tricky part and how you'll set that up depends largely on whether or not you'll be using auto level and the probe.  Once you answer that I can provide further guidance.

Re: USB connection not working

I was planning on using auto level, if that's how the workbench normally works.  I'm used to seeing the printer sample at 16 points before the print.

I don't know much about Marlin, but I am professionally an embedded systems programer, so just a few simple pointers will probably get me going to understand Marlin
