Topic: Still trying to flash PrinterBoard... Solved!

Let's see...
I've D/L & installed Arduino 1.0.6 Teensyduino won't run on much else
I've D/L & installed Teensyduino
I've D/L & unzipped Solidoodle-Marlin_v1-Solidoodle_Marlin_v1_beta to the Arduino directory
I've D/L & unzipped BootloaderHID & put it in the Arduino directory
Run Arduino per the instructions for the PrinterBoard flash, Teeny ++2.0, com3 - all's well - made changes - MB = 81 - Thermistor = 5 - max temp = 295 - Verify/Compile - Save - {shift}Verify/Compile
Open Admin CMD window, after some new words to the creators of Win10 and their entire family tree, finally get to the Arduino directory
Run the "hid_bootloader_cli -mmcu=at90usb1286 -w -v Marlin.cpp.hex"
I get -
Error reading intel hex file "Marlin.cpp.hex"

If I didn't have a new experimental roll of Taulman, I would cease this insanity......  Lord knows there are enough problems just trying to keep this thing running in tune.....

Any help is GREATLY appreciated

Re: Still trying to flash PrinterBoard... Solved!

Is the file you created and move actually named Marlin.cpp.hex? It may have saved as a slightly different name.

The new version of Arduino did away with CPP files and changed them to INO files so the new command line should be

hid_bootloader_cli -mmcu=at90usb1286 -w -v Marlin.ino.hex

Re: Still trying to flash PrinterBoard... Solved!

Ward - double checked the file  - Marlin.cpp.hex is inside the 'buildxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" directory

Carl - I didn't name the hex file {shift} verify/compile created it as a "build (bunch of numbers)" directory and stuck it in the Users...Apps Data>temp directory.  I just copied it and moved it to the directory above the BootLoader directory per the instructions.

I forgot to mention one step I did do - prior to issuing the hid_boot..... command I put a jumper across the only 2 pins in the middle of the board and mashed the reset button.

Are you sure this Taulman won't melt at 230??  smile

I won't quit - I'll get this.....  I hope

230 won't work well if at all.  My advice would be to run through the steps and see if perhaps you've missed something.  You may also find some helpful info here http://reprap.org/wiki/Printrboard#Load … Windows.29

Re: Still trying to flash PrinterBoard... Solved!

I myself couldnt get the .hex file uploaded using the bootloader method. Instead I used FLIP which is what printrbot use on their tutorial for uploading firmware. I will link the guide below.
https://printrbot.dozuki.com/Guide/How+ … 78?lang=en
Ignore step 4 and instead use your own marlin hex file

Re: Still trying to flash PrinterBoard... Solved!

I've been schooching with moving files and directories most of the4 day trying to get the bootloader to see the hex file - no such luck.
I'm gonna have a beer or 10 and give Michaels' suggestion a try.  Thanx for the link.

FLIP works fine as well.
If you truly can't get it working send me a PM and we can figure something out.

Re: Still trying to flash PrinterBoard... Solved!

D/L FLIP and installed it.
Jumpered the Boot pins and hit the 'reset' button'
No new device is found, no Other Devices either.  The only evidence of the SD on the computer is under Ports - Teensy USB Serial (Com3).  The SD is powered on and connected thru RH.  I am stuck with FLIP cuz it wants me to find the AT90USB.... driver and replace it with one of theirs - can't find AT90...

Frustration is teeming here, but there's plenty of beer in the icebox.

Download flip on a different machine and follow the guide to see do you run into the same issues. If theirs anything that's more annoying than driver issues I have yet to find it. They seem to have a mind of their own.
Will I send over some Poitin to help with the frustration smile

Ski52, I've been where you are now and I documented my path out of the wilderness. Try this:

There are subtle changes, follow them carefully.

Re: Still trying to flash PrinterBoard... Solved!

SUCCESS!!!  Thanx for all the help and suggestions, I used/tried them all!
Michael I did D/L , install and try to run FLIP on a different machine - no luck.  I will do it again only this time using the secret weapon - my older Toshiba laptop with Win 7.
Kent - I found a similar easy to follow complete run that helped.  The subtle changes such as where to put the .cpp.hex file, and I copied and pasted the hid command.  You know, after a few beers my fingers get as dyslexic as my noodle.  Copy & Paste is good!
There was no effort to this using Win 7 - I tried for over 2 weeks using 8.1 & 10 and let's don't even talk about OS10.. on the IMac.

Thanx again all...
I am now somewhat versed on how NOT to flash a SD2 PrinterBoard.....

Re: Still trying to flash PrinterBoard... Solved!

I originally was a little upset that the laptop had the little upgrade windows flag, but because of an older ATI graphics card wouldn't accept the upgrade.  I thing I will just leave it alone and put it back of the charger.  I'm still gonna try Michael's FLIP suggestion cuz the lap recognizes the boot jumper and reset button.  8.1 & 10 won't.

There is great joy in Muddville....  (for now)

Re: Still trying to flash PrinterBoard... Solved!

Ski52 ,  Slimstar2  here , I had a lot of trouble getting my SD3 to program 3 times (kept having mother board failures ) . Finally took someones advice (I think it might have been Wardjr's or Azerate ) I changed to a very cheap ( less than 1/4 the price of original Rev E boards) RAMPS 1.4 Setup  . It is so easy to program (Cause it is an Arduino Mega + RAMPS) It is very easy to install thanks to this forum and all the great help everyone here is willing to give. And it does more than Rev E  MB can do. Including a LCD controller panel . I paid $179 for original MB from SD ( 2 times), the complete kit on E bay from $incitycoins included  LCD,MB ,Ramps board, drivers, all wiring, etc was $45. AND FREE SHIPPING. So if you want to get away from all that nonsense of flashing this a much better way to go.  IMHO   My SD3 has Blue tooth ,2 bed heaters ,2 power supplies ,LCD panel and check this IT PROGRAMS WITH ANY ARDUINO IDE I am presently using 1.6.6 It WILL PROGRAM WITH WINDOWS  8.0, 8.1 and yes even WINDOWS 10 with NO SPECIAL EFFORT AT ALL.     Adrian has made a tremendous guide in this forum under Hacks & Mods on converting to RAMPS. He even put STL files for the mounts !
You should check it out.    I know your problem is solved but if you want to play with your settings and add fans or lights or extruders the RAMPS 1.4 is cheap and easy and can do so much more than Rev E can do .  Sincerely Bill D

PS ; I have include some photos of my backup unit I built last January in case I had a problem , but it has never been needed.
I went thru 3 SD Rev E MBs in 2014 so I planned ahead in 2015 but the RAMPS has been flawless.

I may have to check that out for a future project.
For the moment (knock on wood) all is well and printing - it's time now to refine the temps for better printing.

Re: Still trying to flash PrinterBoard... Solved!

That's what I did , got it working with original MB and when I had the money and time I got the RAMPS set up and ready to go . Next time I had some spare time ( and a single malt scotch) I transplanted to new MB and my 3D printing life has been much better ever since!!  Remember a day without printing something is a day that could have been better!  Good Luck man

Alright.... I just checked some EBay stuff..  I can get a RAMPS 1.4 (numbers)(number) etc.. drivers, LCD, cables and stuff for less than 20.00 shipped stateside.  How much grief am I lookin' at?  I could easily be coerced....  Somebody tell me more about PrinterBoard Vs RAMPS.

Re: Still trying to flash PrinterBoard... Solved!

If you just consider that uploading  the software / firmware to it is the same as an Arduino .........it's a winner for me . The fact that you can try software tweaks you want with no problems and no worries that you're gonna have a headache uploading it ........ it's another winner . The fact that you can have 4 or more spares laying around just in case a spike hits or some other act of god (or your accidental dropping a screwdriver into the board) .....it's a three time winner .

need I continue?          Oh yea it can also have more options,,,,, and it is much easier to control with the LCD ...........and can print without being connected to a computer ( SD card  printing )  ....... and tweaking the speed and flow rate  on the fly .......

Re: Still trying to flash PrinterBoard... Solved!

Ski52  make sure you read what is in the kits usually the complete kits are $40 to $50   the ones in the $ 20 range don't have LCD and or cables.  If you follow the threads in this forum and the RAMPS  Wiki it is not very difficult to do.   Bill D

Re: Still trying to flash PrinterBoard... Solved!

RAMPS can be very affordable and easy!
In an attempt to save to cash, I bought a Sainsmart RAMPS 1.4 and the Arduino 2560 shield from Micro Center. Collectively, I paid somewhere between $30-40. El Cheapo
Vouching on the ease of use and reliability, I would first like to point out that I fried, retardedized, and re-fried (with sparks!) the first 3 boards I toyed with: 1) Printrboard 2) RUMBA 3) Sanguinololu
With no experience with RAMPS, I was skeptical of my abilities and said "screw it...a drop in the bucket" if I screw up. After some confusion on the LCD firmware, I had for the first time not killed a board the first time I tinkered with it!

As slimstar mentioned, however, I already had wires/plugs/USB, stepper drivers, and aforementioned LCD. After some resistance, I ultimately tried and instantly liked it. As popular as RAMPS is I expected a bit more info on the wiki before making my purchase, but it really is fairly straightforward.

EDIT:
Re: Ski regarding Printrboard vs RAMPS
If you blow a stepper driver on the Printrboard, you are either buying a new board, or out of a printer until you master your ninja-like soldering skills since it has integrated drivers. RAMPS, RUMBA, SANG and Azteeg have replaceable stepper drivers. This makes it great for maintenance, upgrading, and simple swaps in case of failure or poor performance. The drivers are extra, but worth every penny in the long run.
