Topic: Learned a new trick with Slic3r today...

Who here knows about modifiers in Slic3r? I had no idea until today!

Very useful tool for tweaking infill settings in a particular area of a model.

lol, and it was meant as such. big_smile

curious as to why there hasn't been more discussion about this? or have I simply been blind?

Re: Learned a new trick with Slic3r today...

so there was a discussion on a facebook group about whether or not Simplify3D had a free trial and/or if it was worth the cost...

one of the members of this group had recently uploaded a video going over the basics of S3D and based on that, I decided it was not worth the cost to me (my opinion only here) as I could do pretty much everything in Slic3r that he was showing in S3D. About the only thing I could see that S3D could do, but Slic3r couldnt was custom supports - and Meshmixer can do that... and changing infill on specific layers

anyway, another member of the group mentioned using modifiers in Slic3r to change infill density in specific parts of a model... Really? I asked for more info and was pointed to this blog: http://slic3r.org/blog/modifier-meshes

the Slic3r manual has no specifics about using the modifiers, just that simple blog post...

Re: Learned a new trick with Slic3r today...

You all know there is a free version of S3D floating around? It is an older version at 2.2.2 but hey beggars can't be choosers. I appreciate the member that shared it with me as it has done prints that no other slicer could do. Anyways if you look in the web deep enough I am sure others can find it as well if they want.

Just thought I would throw that out for those who might want to try it out and avoid their rather high price for it. I honestly feel it would be a better deal at 50 bucks and really don't see why they feel it is so special. But again it does magic things for those that don't want to get to deep into settings and modifiers.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

Re: Learned a new trick with Slic3r today...

if you know where to search, you can found 'free' even the last version of S3D...

but S3D is not the holy graal... it's just better for some geometry, and slic3er is better for other...

i can give you some models that get horrible slice from S3D... add up that S3D love to 'simplify' the geometry and you can lost some details with that process (or get too much smoothed zone..)

the only part where S3D is a bit ahead of the other slicer, is for Support that are pretty good...

i use the modifiers in slic3er for a long time, it's really easy..

the only thing that bug me is that you can't save the modifiers configuration (if you use a difficult setup with multiples modifiers) to use it later or to give it with your model so other can use the same parameters as yours.

the other thing is that you need to open slic3er to set the modifiers... you can't do it from Repetier-host...

Re: Learned a new trick with Slic3r today...

yeah, I think most of us know there are "free" versions of S3d floating around - tbh, not really interested. hmm

the variable layer heights I knew about - that is covered in the manual, but the modifier thing I did not know about until yesterday.

printed this out yesterday, at my usual settings for knick knack type stuff - 3 perimeters, 10% infill....and certain areas did not turn out well due to not enough infill under them...

http://soliforum.com/i/?rOb8cZe.jpg

had I known about the modifier before printing, I could have increased the infill in just that area to solve the problem. As it was, I increased the number of perimeters to "fix" it, and it did, but drastically increased printing time by doing so. (not to mention the filament used)

I guess part of my problem was that I generally use Slic3r through RH, and as ysb said, the modifier thing is not available that way. But now that I know about it, I will be using it as a stand alone more often. smile

@carl_m1968 - If you feel the new Ford Mustang is overpriced, do you go steal one in the night? So, why is this ok with software?  That's basically what you are suggesting people do with S3d.  If you feel it's worth it pay the price, if not, don't use it.  Please don't encourage people to pirate software.

The outdated version I referenced is no longer supported by the authors therefore it is as good as shareware.  Also others have stated knowing of its existence. If I am not the one who uploaded the original file or supplying it then I am not the one that is pirating. All I did is mentioned it exist.

You see the term pirating is a grey area but the person who actually supplied the file originally would be the one that pirated it. Then it simply got mirrored and spread around to various archives around the net.

It would be the same as me going out and finding a pirates chest full of treasure buried somewhere. It's not mine but the owner is either no longer around or does not care about it and therefore it is finders keepers.

If S3D was actually concerned about they could have it removed/purged. They have not though as it is out dated and not as functional as the current version such as dual head support. It also offers free advertising as people who try it will most likely buy it for the full functionality and dual color print capability.

BTW I would not own a Ford car even if it was free.

This topic was also dropped as you should have noticed by no further discussion so I am not sure why you are bringing it back up?

I have to say, this is perfect timing. I had exactly that kind of flaw in a recent print, where I really didn't want to increase infill on the rather large item, but had threads drooping on the surface in just a couple of small spots.

I just set up the modifier mesh and sliced with 50% infill in those two zones while leaving the rest at 10%, and the g-code preview looks like it's going to be perfect. It's too late tonight to start the print, but I wanted to say thank you for the information!
