I had exactly that kind of flaw in a recent print, where I really didn't want to increase infill on the rather large item, but had threads drooping on the surface in just a couple of small spots.

I just set up the modifier mesh and sliced with 50% infill in those two zones while leaving the rest at 10%, and the g-code preview looks like it's going to be perfect. It's too late tonight to start the print, but I wanted to say thank you for the information!

yeah, I think most of us know there are "free" versions of S3d floating around - tbh, not really interested.

the variable layer heights I knew about - that is covered in the manual, but the modifier thing I did not know about until yesterday.

printed this out yesterday, at my usual settings for knick knack type stuff - 3 perimeters, 10% infill....and certain areas did not turn out well due to not enough infill under them...

had I known about the modifier before printing, I could have increased the infill in just that area to solve the problem. As it was, I increased the number of perimeters to "fix" it, and it did, but drastically increased printing time by doing so. (not to mention the filament used)

I guess part of my problem was that I generally use Slic3r through RH, and as ysb said, the modifier thing is not available that way. But now that I know about it, I will be using it as a stand alone more often.

You all know there is a free version of S3D floating around? It is an older version at 2.2.2 but hey beggars can't be choosers. I appreciate the member that shared it with me as it has done prints that no other slicer could do. Anyways if you look in the web deep enough I am sure others can find it as well if they want.

Just thought I would throw that out for those who might want to try it out and avoid their rather high price for it. I honestly feel it would be a better deal at 50 bucks and really don't see why they feel it is so special. But again it does magic things for those that don't want to get to deep into settings and modifiers.

so there was a discussion on a facebook group about whether or not Simplify3D had a free trial and/or if it was worth the cost...

one of the members of this group had recently uploaded a video going over the basics of S3D and based on that, I decided it was not worth the cost to me (my opinion only here) as I could do pretty much everything in Slic3r that he was showing in S3D. About the only thing I could see that S3D could do, but Slic3r couldnt was custom supports - and Meshmixer can do that... and changing infill on specific layers

anyway, another member of the group mentioned using modifiers in Slic3r to change infill density in specific parts of a model... Really? I asked for more info and was pointed to this blog: http://slic3r.org/blog/modifier-meshes

the Slic3r manual has no specifics about using the modifiers, just that simple blog post...
