Topic: Finally!!!!!

Well after having my Filastruder and Filawinder kits for over a year now I was finally able to put them together.  I have to say they both went together fairly easy.  I only had to reverse the pot on the winder and will purge the struder tomorrow.  It's nice at the office when everyone else is gone.  I can work on my pet projects.

I did power up the struder and have one question.  Looking at the nozzle, what rotation should the auger be turning?  I think mine is going the wrong way.

If you are looking at the front of the nozzle with the motor behind, the auger should turn clockwise.

Auger should turn clockwise as viewed from
the hotend, like a drill running in reverse.

Well that was fun for a while.  I  checked the rotation and did need to reverse the polls.  Got the heater up to temp and started the purge.  Struder purred along for about an hour.  I noticed that the motor was starting to sound labored and rolled over to that side of the lab where I found that the front end of the housing was being blown out.  Heater was still reading 167°.  Any ideas?http://soliforum.com/i/?gYQ8tze.jpghttp://soliforum.com/i/?blEGwsd.jpghttp://soliforum.com/i/?P4euM99.jpg

Sounds like the shaft collar slipped, allowing the feedscrew to drive backwards towards the motor, pushing out on the front lasercut pieces.

I can send new lasercut pieces but you'll have to figure out what caused it in the first place.

I plan to strip the case down tomorrow to check.  I appreciate the offer for new parts but I'll have my production guys laser me some out of aluminum plate.  I was planning to build a single casing for the two units anyway. I'll let you know what I find.

Be careful with that, those plates are designed to fail intentionally. If you replace the chassis with aluminum and the unit is assembled incorrectly or the shaft collar slips from not being tight enough, you'll destroy the gearbox instead. It isn't rated for the thrust loads at play here.

If you decide against the above, the DXFs are on Thingiverse.

Also, what are you extruding? That doesn't look like the ABS included with the kit?

"Designed to fail intentionally" might have been a little strong.

Back when those were made, the shaft collar wasn't full clamping and there weren't stall protection boards so there was less in the way of protection if things go wrong. The current Filastruder uses an aluminum chassis, no reports of damaged gearboxes yet but it also has the aforementioned full clamping shaft collar and a stall protection (current limiting) board.

167 is probably a good bit low for abs.. with hips/abs i usually run around 180c at the nozzle.

v1.6 should have come with a stall protection board, though there's no display. All stall protection boards work with all motors.

I was using PLA regrind for the purge.  From what I could find it was an issue with the regrind I was using.  I think that the auger just bound up against the corner of the tube and started to push it away from the gearbox.  I'll need to keep an eye on that once I have the system back up.

I've decided to go with the an all Auminum custom housing on the rebuild and look forward to seeing how it goes.

Tim, Not sure about the stall protection board.  Could you describe it?  I put everything together and didn't have any other "boards" in the package.  I'll get you thr exact unit number tomorrow.  Also, I've been looking everywhere for the switches you include in the kit to no avail.  Could you point me in the right direction or sell me some from your stock?  I like yours and want all of the switches to match on the new system.

I buy them in bulk and you probably don't need 1,000 switches, but I'm happy to send you some for free to make up for issues you had with the enclosure. Get in touch via the contact page on the Filastruder site.

v1.5 and earlier kits didn't come with them. v1.6 onward did. You can check which version you have by the serial number.

That's amazing!  I've seen so much smack on other sites about you and your extruder, but less than 5 minutes after I ask a question late at night I have an answer.  Those chumps can go pound sand.  I'll contact you on the Filastruder page and would be glad to pay for the switches.  You are a fantastic vendor Tim.

I would like to thank you for your kind comments.  Tim has been an invaluable resource to this community.  He helps whether or not one of his products is the subject.  Let me be the first to say our community simply would not be the same without his expertise.  It seems that most of the negative comments are from people that either don't follow his instruction or are put off by a short abrubt answer from him.  Those answers once put in context are (my observation) spot on accurate advice and instruction.  He answers to (my guess) thousands of users with questions.  That must be a daunting task, trying to answer and help everyone in a very timely fasion.  When dealing with 3D printing related products, there is an assumption that the end user of a product actually have a brain and/or is willing to engage said brain.  Unfortunately that is not always the case.  I understand how someone can get frustrated when things don't work out perfectly.  We have all been there and done that.  Fortunately, that's when someone like Tim chimes in to help us understand and learn from our mistakes.  For that I say thank you for everything Tim Elmore has taught or forced me to learn.
