Topic: Setting the starting Z point

Old style RH. I set the Z height stop screw so the extruder is just above the print bed. Click Run JOb and it lowers the bed about 10MM before it starts printing so of course, It never reaches the bed.

It was printing, roughly, before I set the extrusion rate. I must have also screwed something else up. Any ideas?

Here is the G-Code that is running on the job:

Re: Setting the starting Z point

We need to talk about that extrusion width wink  Your E3d has a .40 nozzle correct?  Then .48 is now the magic number for extrusion width.
I know that isn't what you posted about.  Take a look at 2 things, Z-offset and the custom start code in your slice profile.

This line tells it to move 7.5mm away from the nozzle (Not ten)
This is generated in the custom G-code (start) section of the slice profile.

Re: Setting the starting Z point

Roger that, .48 extrusion. What sould the Z7.500 be? Z.0?

I would set it for 1 at first and see how close that gets you.. You don't want the nozzle crashing into the bed.

Re: Setting the starting Z point

It prints the first layer fine, then steps the bed down 7.5MM and resumes printing.

When I Home the printer should the bed and extruder be at print height?

Re: Setting the starting Z point

If it prints the first layer fine then try comment out the G1 Z7.500 F4500.000 line by putting a ; in front of it.

Then try the print..

Re: Setting the starting Z point

I'm getting thin, porous floors. I've increased ext heat to 265 (E3D Lite, running 175 ABS filament). It looks like a severe case of under extrusion.

Re: Setting the starting Z point

Double check the extrusion widths, sounds like a typo or any other things that may be typed incorrectly that you've changed in your profile.  That's the error Slic3r gives when there is a parameter out of whack.

Re: Setting the starting Z point

I downloaded the extended Z-stop and printed it. It came out decent and solid.

So my problem seems to be in the way the part is slicing, not the other settings.

Re: Setting the starting Z point

Try slicing another file with the same profile.  It may be that file has an area narrower than .48 and it can't always cope with that.
So if your profile works with another file that points to a bad (non manifold) file.

Different part, same issue. It is 1.5MM thick, the floor, and I can see light thorough it, like thin fabric.

Re: Setting the starting Z point

And I'm getting delamination. Is the filament not hot enough? I am running it at 260 (an E3D Lite extruder, which they say have  max temp of 250).

Re: Setting the starting Z point

I've tried increasing the extrusion rate 110%, slowing the print speed down to 70% of normal...

Where can I find all the suggested RH and SLicr settings for ABS 1.75 (mine mikes out at bout 185-190)?

Any ideas on those two errors I keep getting? That's what is keeping me form adjusting SLicr settings.

Re: Setting the starting Z point

Is there something better than RH/Slicr I should be using?

There is always Simplify3D but it will set you back $150. I have to say it works and does stuff RH can't. I swear by it now and so do others here. There is also Curahost that has Cura slicer built in. Then could also try Craftware if you don't mind a learning curve.

Re: Setting the starting Z point

I just downloaded Craftware. Its still in beta btw. I sliced a part and am about to try printing it.

I don't mind springing for the $150 to eliminate a lot of problems. I've read a few things, most my poppin fresh that aren't too impressed with Simplify3D support. Is that because he was submitting tickets via the web site and they prefer email?

Re: Setting the starting Z point

Craftware seems like its fine, slices real fast, but when you click Run Job, it says Building Print Job and that's all that happens.

DO NOT EXCEED 250c!!!
Running the Lite6 higher than 250 gives off unsafe gases due to the PTFE liner entering the heating block. This recommendation is for health reasons.

The delamination is usually due to loss of heat in your chamber. If running ABS, you will need an enclosure to keep heat in. Small prints can work without one, but printing large parts will become obvious.
Tall or large parts or even ones with thin walls will pull away as well. This is due to the layers cooling and adding "tension" as the print progresses.

Multiple SD2s- Bulldog XL, E3D v5/v6/Lite6, Volcano, Hobb Goblin, Titan, .9 motor, Lawsy carriages, direct Y drive, fishing line...the list goes on

Re: Setting the starting Z point

Okay, I wi; turn down the extruder. I do have a complete enclosure.

I'm now downloading Cura to see if it slices better.

Re: Setting the starting Z point

Cura also slices it fast, I load the gcode in RH and tell it to Print, it says Building Print Job and does nothing more.

Cura has it's own host that can control the printer as well. You don't need RH if using Cura.
