Topic: Still can't get octoprint working. Using wi pi adapter

I must be the only person who has built 4 printers (1 from scratch of my own design), including firmware mods, yet still can't get octoprint to work over wifi.  I had a thread about this earlier this year and never resolved it and my raspberry pi B+ has been sitting in the box ever since.

I can get octoprint image loaded onto the disk no problem.  It works over the ethernet cable (all the way into configuring access control) but I can't get a working wifi dongle.  I used to have an edimax dongle that I never got working.  Then Tom's Octoprint 2016 guide came out (below) and I figured I would get the wi pi adapter and try again.  Still no luck, it only works over ethernet again which is unacceptable because my printer is on the other side of the house from the router and the whole reason I want it is to go wireless.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwsxO3ksxm4

The wi pi adapter is known by Tom and others to not cause a power issue or need a powered USB hub.  The followed his instructions at about 4:15 to modify the text file and put in my wifi network name and password exactly and I triple checked that there is not a typo and all the comment #'s are taken out.  Apparently, for everyone else, the wi pi "just works" but for me... not so much.  Where can I begin troubleshooting the wi pi dongle?  Help please!  I can't believe I have struggled so much with a simple task that thousands of others have gotten with no problem.

The wi pi dongle is not flashing blue indicator light so I know that is the issue.  Are there additional drivers or something that I have to install with octoprint?  There was nothing like that in Tom's video and apparently the wi pi was specifically made to work with the raspberry pi.

Yes.  Like I said, octopi works over ethernet.  It is some kind of wifi problem.

I had to set up my octopi wifi by going to the start menu> preferences> wifi config. I have a monitor hooked to the hdmi port with wireless usb mouse and keyboard.

Re: Still can't get octoprint working. Using wi pi adapter

I had exactly the same problem for a long time. If you go to Octoprint's site and watch the video it says that you can open octoprint-network.txt file. You have to do this in wordpad, or else it all shows up in one line. When you open it in wordpad it is formatted properly. All you have to do is plug in your wifi and password, and will work. Otherwise you are SOL. If you try to open it by double-clicking it will not work.

When I boot it hooked up to the monitor (my tv), how to I get to the start menu from the command line?  Are you saying that you had to go to the desktop as if it was raspberrian?  I'm not sure how to do that.

I opened it and modified it with open office but any text editor should work.  Then I reopened it to make sure it saved and it was fine.  I don't think this is the problem for me...

If you haven't tried this, maybe it will help. No guarantees...

Re: Still can't get octoprint working. Using wi pi adapter

elmoret, thanks.  That was it.

I did the changes described in the link from widespreaddeadhead but it broke the file, it now throws up an error when it boots.  Here is a screen shot:

Is there something else that has to be uncommented?  I' not sure where the error is.  Thanks.

And I'm too lazy to edit out my wifi network and password but its not like you guys are in range and I don't reuse passwords.

My work blocks the picture links, but I'll look at it when I get home. Mine throws up an error on boot up also, but check the dongle lights, mine stills works with the error. Might be different than yours though, will report back tonight.

You need to uncomment the line:
# iface wlan0 inet dhcp

Not sure about the line under, but on mine I removed that comment too.

Re: Still can't get octoprint working. Using wi pi adapter

I did that and rebooted and still no wifi.  Kronikabuse pointed out to me in PM that my octopi is completely missing the wifi GUI.  It is the latest version from their own webpage so that is strange.  Proceeding with his image that he sent me now...

Re: Still can't get octoprint working. Using wi pi adapter

So I got a new octoprint image from kronikabuse but I can't load is because it says it is out of space when the pi boots and you go to pick an OS, even though there is 6+ GB available on the card.  Google has turned up multiple things to try, none of which have worked yet.

Also downloaded noobs and there is also no wifi GUI there, so something is very strange.  Everyone says octoprint is easy, but here I am with about 25+ hours and 2 wifi adapters and still can't even get the damn thing connected to wifi.

Does anyone else have an octoprint image you can send me to try? PM me for email address.  Thanks.

Re: Still can't get octoprint working. Using wi pi adapter

I noticed the latest doesn't have wifi GUI either, but the above worked for me on two different Pi's.

Did you format the SD card before putting kronikabuse's image on the card? I can't see what he sent you, but if you had to pick an OS it sounds like someone sent you a copy of NOOBS and not a copy of OctoPi.

What brands of wifi adapters are you using? Not that I know much about them anyway.

If you want to start from scratch I can probably help you by writing up a step by step. Otherwise, try downloading an older version of OctoPi and find which one has the wifi GUI that's easiest for you.

Re: Still can't get octoprint working. Using wi pi adapter

Yes, I did a full format before.  I'm using the adapter called the wipi, its made just for the raspberry pi and was supposed to be the easiest to install.  I will be looking for an older version of octopi, any suggestions on where to start?  I don't see it on the official webpage.

Re: Still can't get octoprint working. Using wi pi adapter

I have octoprint working!  I'm prepared for you all to make fun of me for this...  I had my router set to WEP not WPA2, so of course doing everything right under WPA2 didn't do any good until I changed my router settings.  Go ahead, tell me how stupid I am.  If it helps, the wife was the one home when the verizon guy came and setup this router so she just accepted all the defaults and I never went back to check it even though I've been in this house over a year.  Oh well.

So now I have to get cura working within Octoprint.  I found my .ini files to import but it won't "accept" clicking on the confirm button, like it is still expecting more.  How can I get it to take this file so that I have something to pick from when I go to slice an object?  Thanks again!

Good to hear it's working!

I upload g-code from slic3r so I won't be help with the on-board Cura, I bet someone else can chime in though.

Re: Still can't get octoprint working. Using wi pi adapter

Im having the exact same problem and can't for the life of me get it working on my Wifi. But yet I can go in to Noobs and configure the WIFI settings and the Dongle then works. But on Octopi nothing. I checked both my router to see if I was having the same issue. I checked my Octopi network file multiple times. I just don't get it.

Re: Still can't get octoprint working. Using wi pi adapter

Ok folks finally after struggling this is what I observed. When you have this issue for some reason when I edited my file in OS X when I used the ( " ) in pi those quotes looked like some kind of box. So I logged in to the octopi server with a keyboard and screen and edited the file in that with the shift 2 and for what ever reason that made the correct kind of quotes. Then WhallA!
