Topic: What am I doing wrong??

I don't know what else to do. I have had my DaVinci since Christmas 2014 and have not used it much since it is so frustrating to get good results. I had it dialed in OK about 6 months ago and now I would like to use it for a new project I am working on. A week ago I flashed it with Repetier .92 and I am very happy with the new freedom it allows me for control. However I have not had a successful print since I flashed it. Some of my issues could be attributed to my new filament as well. I am using a new roll of HATCHBOX ABS. These photos are of my last attempt at printing my E3D V6 mount I can not seem to get anything usable. Can anyone tell what is going on based on the pictures?

Here are my settings.
Print Speed 40
First Layer Speed 30
Perimeter 30
Infill 60
Layer Height .2
Shell Thickness .8
Infill Overlap 15%
Air Gap 0
Retraction Speed 40mm/s
Retraction Distance 4mm
Hot End Temp 230
Bed Temp 115

If there are any other settings that would help please let me know.

Re: What am I doing wrong??

Bed temp is way too high. Start at 90 and go from there.  Try lowering the extruder temp to 220-225 as well.  Another thing I noticed is the retraction distance. Set it to 1mm.  4mm is too much.

Re: What am I doing wrong??

Two problems I notice:
First your parts are rather small and since there is no cooling fan on a da vinci, the small movement locations are not getting chance to cool properly before the next layer is being laid down; thus you have semi-liquid goo under the molten goo being laid down, and it will grab the prior layer and mangle it.  Not sure there is a fix for this other than adding a remote area part which would force your print head to travel across the bed to print it, allowing your real part to cool for a couple seconds.

Second, I hate to say it, as I am not a fan of XYZ's firmware/software, but you hacked your printer and are using a much more complex piece of firmware that is not really setup well for a davinci.  There are countless repetier people here that just cant get it right....

Re: What am I doing wrong??

Try lowering the temp like Evan said. bed temp is usually 90 for me. and I usually print at 225.
my retraction is set to 3. you may also want try lowering your extrusion multiplier.

I would recommend trying this one at a time so you can see what ones help the most

personally I never got good results from hatch box abs it was always blobby no mater what temps and settings I used. It also did vapor smooth. it would get soft and mushy but not smooth for me.  So it could also be the plastic.

Re: What am I doing wrong??

Ok so you guys are awesome. Just those few suggestions have improved my last print by 100%.
Print temp is now 220
Bed temp is now 90
Retraction distance is now 1mm

It was much better after these settings but it still looked like it was pulling layers up as the head went by so I raised my Z offset by .2 and that really helped.

sfraden mentioned that since my parts were small there ware not enough cooling between the layers. So I upped my minim layer time to 10sec and turned on my large fans mounted in the sides of my printer.

This all helped me get one of the cleanest prints yet.

I started this cooling duct print and left for lunch. I came back to find the printer stopped mid print. The printer was also beeping every 60 seconds or so. There was no error on the LCD and Repetier just said Idle. Here is the last entries from the log.

13:15:07.849 : Printing layer 109 of 399
13:15:18.452 : Error:One heater seems decoupled from thermistor - disabling all for safety!
13:15:18.463 : Error:Temp. raised to slow. Rise = 0.29 after 301152 ms
13:15:18.864 : Printer reset detected - initalizing
13:15:18.875 : start
13:15:18.875 : Host Print stopped by user.
13:15:19.171 : Printed filament:76.73m Printing time:0 days 14 hours 46 min
13:15:19.734 : Error:expected line 1 got 35761
13:15:19.737 : Resend:1
13:15:27.810 : X:-33.00 Y:-12.00 Z:21.900 E:3626.0908

So the print looks great but failed mid print. Can anyone tell what thermistor the log is referencing? (Hot end or Bed)
What might cause this?

I am very excited at the better quality but bummed about this problem I think I had this happen the other night as well but I just attributed it to the my PC or something.

Re: What am I doing wrong??

UPDATE:

I think I found out why my prints were failing due to the thermistor not working. It seems that when I have my 4 80mm fans running to cool my prints, once the bed lowers enough into the fans cooling zone. The Bed heater can not keep up with the rapid cooling from the fans. Making the printer think the bed heater as stopped working. The ironic part is that I am trying to print a new layer cooling duct to attach to the carriage so I can localize my cooling and won't have to use the large fans anymore.

So the plan is to print a poor quality fan duct with my fans off so I can mount it up and use it to print the good quality fan duct.

With the proper cooling my stock setup is printing the best I have ever seen it print. I can't wait to get my E3D so I can print in PLA.

Can't you just disable on or more of the large fans so you have just enough air flow? Sounds like right now you have overkill. The idea with fans and cooling is just enough.
