Topic: Help with SD2 Sang Motherboard header pin parts, please?

I am trying to solder on new connections to my SD2 Sang motherboard to add a L-Cheapo laser with PWM , I think I am using pins too small but I can't just figure what would be the right size. Even if I solder them in, they seem to slip out so easy and seem a lil too small. They are the holes that would be for the fan/SD card mods. I have tried a few of these (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FR1 … ge_o06_s00) . Please some help in finding the part header pins as I am trying to get this up and running by xmas smile

Those should work they aren't supposed to be tight in the holes.  The trick is to find a way to support them in position while you solder.  Remember to apply most of the heat to the pin itself.

I'm going to try what you said and heat the pins. Thanks.

Re: Help with SD2 Sang Motherboard header pin parts, please?

I have it a try and it seems it just blackened my board because there is only the tinyist clearance to touch the pins at the bottom and it has started to melt the pcb. Is my board done? Where can I buy a new one that might have these header pins attached already, if i do need to buy a new one. As for the picture I  know i need to make sure none the metal is touching. I'm just showing the blackening.http://soliforum.com/i/?rw1TZVK.jpg

Would this be the same board? Only difference is this says 1.3A other then 1.3C.

I think you should consider a different board all together (rumba).  The board being black doesn't mean anything unless the traces are peeling up.  Option 2, why use pins when you can just solder wires in there.  Go buy yourself some flux and use it to clean the pins or wire.  Then make sure your iron tip is clean.  Get it hot and wipe it on a wet sponge.

Re: Help with SD2 Sang Motherboard header pin parts, please?

Sorry I didn't answer your first question.  Yes for the most part that is the same board.  That's why I'm suggesting a different board.  You would have to look at the reprap WIKI to see the revision differences.  Wouldn't getting the same board put you exactly where you are now? Having to solder pins?

Re: Help with SD2 Sang Motherboard header pin parts, please?

On the motherboard, from the screenshot it looks like the pin I need are already done, but I am open to getting another board. I just figured as close as possible board would be much easier

As for my current problem I went back to connecting the L-cheapo laser the old way even if I won't get PWM for now. Except now I have a big problem which I am sure I caused somehow,  that I have determined it not the laser itself.  seems if ther eis power the laser and/or the extruder just turns on. The laser comes on, or the extruder just starts heating up and up and up. I have been trying to look for areas where there could be a short with no luck, though it acts like there is a short. I even ran a new wire from the Extruder power connection to the extruder connection. I looked for loose wires etc.

I am stumped at this point unless it's the bad work I tried to do in the PWm area. I am starting to think the whole printer is a loss, which sucks more since the laser was supposed to be my xmas gift, probbaly my fault for trying to do it on the cheap without electrical knowledge.

Re: Help with SD2 Sang Motherboard header pin parts, please?

Could this prolem becaused by my attempt to add pins in the pwm area. Even if I'm not using them? Any other suspect connections besides the power connection to the extruder?

Re: Help with SD2 Sang Motherboard header pin parts, please?

Um yeah, you may want to check the area where you we soldering.  Also, because I assume you did your homework.  On the Sang you have there is more to getting PWM to work than just soldering in the pins.  So here's what you do,,,,, take a deep breath and let's come up with a solid plan.  I assume the hope is to control the fan via the fan slider in RH?
No worries about the whole thing being junk.  If you're willing to put forth the effort there's a few users around that are more than will to help you come up with the steps to move forward with this project.

Re: Help with SD2 Sang Motherboard header pin parts, please?

I think I really just need the pins because the L-Cheapo people attached a MOFSET etc to the laser and added a PWM wire etc. Though I am not currently using the PWN feature with the current extruder auto turning on issue. My intent was to control the laser via the fan slider, but it's basically the same setup as a fan, just a laser.

I am going to see if I can undo the bad soldering in my pin area. See how much I can clean it out

Re: Help with SD2 Sang Motherboard header pin parts, please?

You may be correct if that's all included.  I just don't want to see you go through all the effort to find out a step was missed.  A solder sucker is a great affordable tool they would help with your clean up efforts.

Re: Help with SD2 Sang Motherboard header pin parts, please?

- It seems cleaning up my soldering helped with the "always on" issue with the extruder, unless it was luck since I was tinkering with the machine. I shall see in time.

- I accidently messed up my PWM wire, so in the end until I am ready to deal with that I am for now just going to use it the either full on or full off mode and skip PWM, so for now don't need a new motherboard. May revisit later. The person who sells the L-Cheapo were quite helpful to tell me how I messup and how to bypass the PWM since I messed the PWM up LOL. So I am basically just using the extruder power connection.

- While I am *technically* not supposed to use the laser till xmas because it's an xmas gift (my hubby let me get it working beforehand hehe). I did a quick engrave and a full on cut with the laser. Neato. Once I get a lil better handle on the settings I'll come back and make a new whole new post about the L-Cheapo laser after xmas.  I found a way to use it with general R-host and Slic3r with a few tweeks(add a few G-code lines and remove a few) and I think the LaserEtch software will work too. For example for a cut I treated the print like doing a vase but with no bottom or top layer. I plan to see if there is a way to tweek to do both a cut and engrave at the same time, not sure if feasible yet given cuts you want to go much slower. As for engraving think stuff, I think I will just have to set my speed faster since I don’t have PWM control.
