Topic: New Workbench

So I just got my workbench today and it came with no instructions. So far i figured out how to get it connected to my PC, but I've no clue how to do anything else with it. Someone have any suggestions?

Re: New Workbench

Do you have Repetier-Host installed?
You are going to need Slic3r also but that comes pre installed on RH.
If the Solidoodle site doesn't have default profiles and software you can download the software and we can help create them from scratch.  From scratch will be better in the end anyways.  Ask away and we will help.  But you should start at the SD site to see what's available.

Re: New Workbench

Yes I have Repetier-Host installed, but when I am using the manual controls if I attempt to move the plate up with the program it will take the plate down and I couldn't figure out how to set the Z-Offset. So I downloaded the Soliprint software and was able to configure everything, however after two small test prints I had to shut it off to go to bed. I came back to it the next day and it was no longer configured and it hasn't configured properly since...

Re: New Workbench

Up is down and down is up in RH.  Think of it this way, it doesn't know the bed is moving.  It thinks the nozzle is moving away (up) from the bed.  So it's working properly and since RH is more mainstream it is probably going to be best to us it instead of Soliprint.

Re: New Workbench

As ward says (beat me to it haha!): The manual controls may be doing what they're supposed to: z can be thought of as the gap between the bed and the nozzle: "up" increases the distance between, and "down" decreases the distance. Hence why the plate should move down when you click up and up when you click down... :Z

The z-offset can be set in firmware: using the g-code M206 - look up online using the terminal in R-H, and learn a bit about reprap g-codes if you're not yet familiar.

Most firmware configuration settings that you've adjusted through the host, or through terminal M-code commands, can be saved, such that the configuration sticks when the power is turned off, with M500.

I agree with ward, R-H will be the better choice for compatibility, learning about the printer, and getting help from us / others on the net. smile

Re: New Workbench

Is there a standard z offset that would be a good starting point?

Re: New Workbench

Are you using the autolevel feature?
I prefer zero offset but don't use autolevel.

Re: New Workbench

Yes I used the auto level feature, but even when i don't its first layer is so close it only smears a little plastic on the glass.

Your first layer should be thin. Ideally you want it to be half or less of your desired layer height, but not so smooshed that it causes excessive back pressure in the hotend.

Re: New Workbench

Ok, got some test prints out of it yesterday and it was mainly just not sticking to the plate. Resolved that issue and turned it off for the night. But today it keeps error out with error code 0. Saying that the temp was changed and to set it after restart? Any Ideas?

Re: New Workbench

Start with the most simple thing, what's your room temp?  If it's too cold you will get an error.  Try warming up the room some.

Re: New Workbench

Your answer is right there at the bottom, MAX TEMP TRIGGERED.  You have the temperature set to 235.  I'm not certain but pretty sure that SD sets the max temp at 220.  Try setting the temps lower.

Re: New Workbench

So as far as my z offset goes, how do I need to adjust that. not matter how much I change it its still against the glass so much it cant print. I have it set to 1 right now, does it need to go negative maybe?      So far this thing is just a useless piece of junk. I'm probably getting a refund on it.

Re: New Workbench

I would suggest you accept and embrace your printer as yours.  Realize this is fairly new technology and treat each obstacle as an opportunity to learn something new.  It won't matter what printer you own there are going to be challenges.  I have expressed my dislike of autolevel on many occasions.  True manual leveling is in my opinion far superior to any software compensation process out there.  A negative value for z-offset makes no sense to me but at this point what do you have to lose?  Try -1 and let us know the results.
We all understand your frustration as we've all been there ourselves.  Some of use turn that frustration into opportunity and others simply walk away.  No one can make that decision for you.
Before you blame the machine (and I'm not suggesting it isn't the machine) try your best to truly understand the technology.  We are all here to help each other.

Re: New Workbench

Also people have found it very difficult to get the refunds they are promised.  It is risky to send your printer back, because you might find yourself without both the printer and the money you paid for it.  If you do get your money back and use it to buy a different printer, you may simply end up with a different set of challenges getting that one started.

Well and someone send me screen shots of recommended settings that have worked with their so I can configure mine? Hopefully properly? All I'm doing is changing things in hopes that they work.

and that is exactly how a lot of us learned what works and what doesn't - trial and error and asking questions. Yes, it can be frustrating at times - at that point it is usually a good time to shut it down, and go do something else for a while, clear the head, and come back to it in a better frame of mind.

I also have to agree with wardjr on the manual bed leveling. once done right, I only have to tweak mine maybe once a week or so.

I know there are a couple of people around that have workbenches - sadly, i am not one of them.

how about you post some screenshots of your current settings, and maybe we can see something you don't that might help?

Re: New Workbench

This thing is just so frustrating, Ive used 3D printers before, mostly $30,000 and all, but I knew for the price this one would take some work, though it would be mine and not the schools. However with 2 weeks of tweaking everything for like 5 hours a day and only getting 2 extremely small prints it so aggravating.

one thing i notice right off the bat is your bed size is different in RH & in Slic3r - those settings should be the same...

http://soliforum.com/i/?C3PsbNr.jpg

http://soliforum.com/i/?SN3PNMM.jpg

also curious about why the X max is set to 336, but the print area width is 305? Dump areas are usually only 5 to maybe 10mm more than actual bed size - not 31...

Would like to see more of your slicer settings as well

http://soliforum.com/i/?nwWZMdl.jpg

for horizontal shells, 3 top & bottom is usually sufficient - but does kind of depend on the print...

on your filament tab, the filament diameter I am assuming is a measured & averaged diameter?

How did you arrive at the .9 extrusion multiplier number?

Heartless, I haven't displayed those because them from the standard templates that were there when I downloaded repetier from the Solidoodle website, as the print bed sizes, I have not changed the extrusion multiplier or the printbed size from where they were when I Installed it. I'm going to completely remove anything to do with repetier and reinstall I guess..  Do yall suggest I just use a newer version and configure it myself or to use the solidoodle version?

Re: New Workbench

Ok, uninstalling it and deleting all its saved files and reinstalling I got it partially printing now. Its not sticking to the plate, which can be remedied by using kapton tape or glue sticks right? and secondly, the first layer is so pressed againt the glass that it is only printing in certain spots and cant place any filament in others. that means the z-offset needs tweaked right?

25

Re: New Workbench

Profiles from scratch aren't that difficult and how I prefer to do it.  If you are printing on glass you should consider spraying it with some Aquanet extreme hold hairspray.  It sounds as though you have a slight z offset issue and should try moving the nozzle away from the bed .1to.2mm
If it extrudes in some areas and not others, that would indicate a bed surface that isn't perfectly flat.  You can manipulate the first layer extrusion width to promote adhesion.  I like to run about .36 for a .4 nozzle
It seems as though you need to do some serious calibration.  Start with feed rate (100mm called =100mm pulled) then print a calibration cube 20x20 and measure the single wall perimeter.  This should be .48mm adjust the extrusion multiplier until it is correct.
