You'll crank through all the steps with no problems.
It looks harder than it is.

I go to the end but I'm getting an "temperature is reset. set it after restarting. Fix the error and use M999 to restart."

My temperature is reading 357.5 and a quick google search suggests there might be a probelm with the thermistor.  Any suggestions on debugging?  I'm not seeing any obvious breaks in the wire.

Your thermistor is probably making electrical contact with the heating block. To test if this is the case try taking the thermistor out of the block and see if it works then. You have to get the sleeve all the way up to the head of the thermistor.

Bingo!  That was it.

For anyone else finding this thread later...  If the temp is 0, you likely have a bad connection.  If Temp is very high, its likely my problem above.

0 degrees indicates open circuit, high temperature indicates a short.

After a few mishaps, I finally created the first part from my E3D Lite nozzle.   I've still got a few lingering tuning problems that maybe one of you experts could give a quick answer to.

  • What is the recommended Extruder mechanism? The E3D lite was slightly too big for the original MK5 I was using. At first I let it sit out farther but that binded the filliment. Later, I broke the MK5 trying to force it.  Luckily I had printed spares so used a heat gun to deform the backup MK5 and get things lined up.

  • After the upgrade and flashing my board, Repetier host no longer show the power going to the heater. All I see is the temperature curve. I've got an old version of RH.   

  • Speaking of RH, I've got an old version. This seems like a good time to upgrade.  What do you all like for Slicing and printing on SD2/SD3?

  • I'm over-extruding. No doubt there are other tweeks I need to do.  Anyone know of some good Slic3r or other reference setting for an SD2/SD3 with an E3D Lite?

P.S. I captured some pics during the installation as the pics in the tutorial are with a different E3D.  I'll try to update the Wiki when I find some time but if someone wants to do it sooner, I'm glad to send them to you.

  • So is your hotend heating or not?

  • Very broad question.  For now, just update repetier and you will have the latest version of slic3r and cura.

  • Search these forums for calibration and steps per mm settings

Where do I connect the thermistor, heater cartridge, and heat sink fan wires?

The thermistor connects to E therm.  The fan can connect to any always on 12v even direct to the PSU or tied into another always on fan.  I can't see the board well enough to tell which pins are for the heat cartridge.  But it would be labeled something like E heat.  If that is a Sangunololu board the pins would be on the end not shown in the picture.

So I just learned a valuable lesson. How do I know if my hot end is really heating or not? The answer is don't use your finger to check. No damage but it still hurt.
