Topic: e3d chimera and ramps upgrade

So I decided to upgrade to a duel extruder on my sd4. I went with the e3d chimera setup with a  ramps board to run it off a xbox psu. I used lawsy's marlin setup. I got all the wires hooked up except the fan/led power. Hooked it up to repeater and got it to move around. Just a few minor bugs to work out now.still kinda new to this and could use any feedback and help.
I also had to design a y carriage adaptor for the chimera http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:763243

Re: e3d chimera and ramps upgrade

Just a couple of notes: you'll want to provide some strain relief for your wires.  I zip tied mine to the tubes fairly close to the heatsink and they seem secure.  The forward you flashed will work but there is a better one available.  It's still lawsy's just updated and can be found here.

Re: e3d chimera and ramps upgrade

Both extruders have to use the same steps per mm in Marlin, possibly others.

Re: e3d chimera and ramps upgrade

you will also need to change the build plate dimensions in RH since the duel heads use some of the space

Solidoodle 2 with Deluxe kit cover & glass bed with heater. and 2nd board SD2 used not 3rd and alum platform not installed yet still wood. also need cooling fan installed to board. use Repetier Host couple vers. Slic3r also have all free ware STL programs

ok getting in to this farther. Im getting a clicking when i try to print

could it be a power supply issue? vref not perfect?
only does it when the heaters are on. I have one xbox psu 203w connected to the ramps 1.4 board. Second power supply just for the leds and fans

Re: e3d chimera and ramps upgrade

The single 30mm fan would'nt keep the heatsink cool. So I tried a 40mm and it worked better. But if I was printing dual color it still seemed to heat up. Now i went to a dual 40mm fan. Works like a charm now lol.

Re: e3d chimera and ramps upgrade

Is it possible to hook up LED's to the heater wires? I want them to be lit when the heaters are active.

Re: e3d chimera and ramps upgrade

Or even better. Have them set to be on if the thermisitors read in a certain range? I wouldnt even know where to start to program that though.

Easy - you need an LED and a resistor. The heater is 12V supply when on, so you'll want a resistor of about 1kOhm.

Negative/cathode/flat/short leg of the LED gets soldered to the heater negative wire, positive/anode/round/long leg of the LED to the resistor, and the other end of the resistor to the positive heater wire. The heater itself is not polarized, but you'll have to match up with the +/- connection on the main board.

From a practical point of view, be careful of leaving any of the connections exposed - it's a high-current supply, so a short between the two heater cables will make some heat! Also could damage your board. So make sure you use electrical tape / heatshrink to insulate the connections well. Of course keep solder joints and these components away from the actual heater block, they may not like the high temperatures.

The LED will only be on when the heater is powered - so it will flicker when the heater is at temperature and the PWM is operating.

If you are happy to play with firmware, Marlin has a feature called "auto fan" - look it up in the configuration.h and configuration_adv.h files. You can set a temperature threshold above which a fan turns on. Instead of connecting a fan to this output, you could connect an LED, and the LED will illuminate whenever the hotend temperature is above that set threshold, whether or not the heater is actively powered (so including cool-down).

You'd have to run a new pair of wires from the mainboard to wherever you'd like to locate that LED, and use a fan/spare output of some kind on the RAMPS. 1kOhm resistor + LED as above, same idea, but connected to the board like an extra g-code fan.
