Topic: SD4 with e3d v6 upgrading to Rumba board

Hi all,
I've finished wiring my rumba board up, with the help of a couple threads on the forum.
I'm about to flash my firmware later today, and had 1 quick question before I started.

I have an e3dv6, during the firmware portion, do I just need to change the thermistor and temp settings(in addition to the standard changes for installing the board.

Here is a pic of my setup

Re: SD4 with e3d v6 upgrading to Rumba board

I'm having a bit of trouble right now,
fan 1 doesn't seem to get any power, so I swapped it to fan 0 for now.
Also, when it touches the endstop, it does not stop.
And is there a proper way to set the vref on the drivers?

Re: SD4 with e3d v6 upgrading to Rumba board

You'll need to steal a few unused jumpers from the board where the unused drivers go.

Adjust VREF by ear and feel, start with them in the middle.

Re: SD4 with e3d v6 upgrading to Rumba board

Fan 0 is your G-code controlled fan or slider in RH.
Fan 1 is set in configuration.adv and turns on with movement or bed heat then stays on for a set time after things stop.  It's one of the best features ever.  It's amazing how loud all those fans are.  If you have trouble finding it let me know and I'll post a screenshot.

I tried moving the bed and turning on the bed heater, still no led for the Fan 1.
Endstops fixed sorta, the switches work now, but when I home, it only moves a little bit, I have to keep clicking the home button to keep it moving, and once it hits the endstop, it can't move away from it.

attached is my marlin file, if anyone smarter than I could look at it and see what I screwed up.

Re: SD4 with e3d v6 upgrading to Rumba board

If running Marlin as set for regular SD23or 4 you will need those jumpers shown in the above picture.  I have yet to get it to work properly through firmware changes alone.  I'm not in a position to view your file.  Smart phone isn't as smart as I'd like.

Re: SD4 with e3d v6 upgrading to Rumba board

yup, use a couple of the spare jumpers from an unused stepper driver slot in the empty end stop locations. I had the same problem until wardjr set me straight. wink

Re: SD4 with e3d v6 upgrading to Rumba board

a couple observations on your firmware....

max extruder temp setting should be set to 295 to take over run into account - going over 300 will damage the thermistor.
#define HEATER_0_MAXTEMP 310     //{SD Patch}

your endstop settings:
// ENDSTOP SETTINGS:
// Sets direction of endstops when homing; 1=MAX, -1=MIN
#define X_HOME_DIR -1
#define Y_HOME_DIR -1
#define Z_HOME_DIR 1

mine are:
// ENDSTOP SETTINGS:
// Sets direction of endstops when homing; 1=MAX, -1=MIN
#define X_HOME_DIR 1
#define Y_HOME_DIR 1
#define Z_HOME_DIR -1

My printer is also an SD4 running on a Rumba and an E3D v6 hotend.
If you don't have one, I highly recommend an 8825 stepper driver for the extruder - much nicer than a 4988 with the E3D.

Thanks! That fixed my endstop issue!
All my drivers are 8825.

We must be doing something different because I'm running marlin on rumba and I have no jumpers on the unused end stops like your picture shows.  Works fine for me without them.

Re: SD4 with e3d v6 upgrading to Rumba board

Some of it comes down to being able to have one file that'll work across multiple printers.  I don't doubt it can be done I just haven't dedicated the time.  This is an easy solution to making changes to firmware that some find confusing.

Would be interesting to know what you did in the firmware to make that happen. smile

Re: SD4 with e3d v6 upgrading to Rumba board

Last question (hopefully)
So for the firmware for steps, do I just double the steps? I have 8825 drivers in xyz and extruder set to 1/32 microstepping.

Re: SD4 with e3d v6 upgrading to Rumba board

yup, double the steps to start with, then print some calibration cubes to make sure things are printing accurately.

btw - Solidoodle tends to way over do the steps for the extruder - try it around 210 or so to start with (105 for 4988 steppers x 2), then do the calibrations to verify it is feeding the correct amount and adjust accordingly.

I didn't really do anything, I just downloaded the firmware that ward posted a long time ago on my big RUMBA thread, hooked up the end stops and it worked without jumpers.  So I don't know why others are saying that you need jumpers.  If you want, send me a PM with your email and I'll send you a copy of the firmware I use but its nothing special as far as I know.

This has made you the exception to the rule wink. Yours actually worked the way it's supposed to and by my count that is one out of 17 that I have encountered.  Like I said before, if I would just take the time I'm sure there's a logical answer.  In the meantime jumpers keep it simple.
