Topic: what other spare connector parts should i order?

so, the multimeter is telling me my SD4 has bad wires from the printrboard to the hotend (hotend passes resistance check, wires from printrboard to hotend do not -- http://support.solidoodle.com/hc/en-us/ … lidoodle).

what spare connectors should i pick up? i assume digikey is the best option?

do i need the http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/e … -ND/132430 tool or is there another option to terminate them?

any other connectors i should pick up at the same time (such as for the stepper motors?)

edit: fixed links
edit2: clarified 'heater' as hotend.

Assuming this is the extruder heater... those plugs look like the ones that come with the stock solidoodle and will work fine, but personally I went with JST plugs because they are a little easier to work with, IMO.  I just crimp the connector on with needle nose pliers.

If it were the bed heater, I prefer not to have any additional resistance in those lines, so the best case is the wires are long enough to go to the board.  If that is not the case, I would just crimp with a ferule and not worry about having to take it apart later because you should not have to be installing a new bed heater or removing the bed frequently.

These are the bee's knees and make it easy to add, remove, even change to another board. I would say to run the wires all the way to the board and get rid of the connectors near the motor...there's a lot of motion along that run.

Azerate, you don't use connectors at your hot end wire bundle?  Agreed that there is a lot of motion but I end up taking my hot end off enough for either switching between the V6 and volcano or cleaning something often enough that it is worth it to have connectors there.  I have never had a JST plug fail on me.

Re: what other spare connector parts should i order?

I used to use snap-crimp connectors, but I found they would fail every few months. I loved using them for cleaning and whatnot, but that was for my v5 which had the thermistor taped into place; so when a thermistor failed, I could just reconnect and be done with it. However, I found the motion to aid thermistors failing.
With the v6/Lite6/Volcano blocks securing the thermistors, I found it to be just as long to unscrew, remove the thermistor, and re-install a new thermistor into the existing lines...the E3D kits come with more than enough wire, so I leave slack in the rear in case I need to pull a section for a new sensor.
In the end, I've found it to be very useful.

However, the benefit here is that there are many ways to do the same job. I mainly wanted to profess my love for those Pololu connectors....should you want to extend all the way to the board. Plus, they are cheaper and more abundant than the stock SD molex.

Re: what other spare connector parts should i order?

sorry, yes, the hotend, not the heated bed. thank you for the recommendation, those look like a great choice. i assume 22 gauge stranded wire is preferred. anything else i should pick up from there to have on hand for spares/mods?
