Topic: Da Vinci 1.0 on Repetier randomly stops mid print... troubleshooting?

First 3D printer.

It's a Da Vinci 1.0, running Repetier 0.92, Arduino 1.5.8, and Repetier Host V1.5.6.

The printer will stop at random points in the middle of prints.

The steppers will be moving fine, I'm getting no errors in the log. All of a sudden it freezes. The printer is still responsive, I can page through menus. I've successfully sent manual controls to the printer after it freezes, as well (changed my bed temperature). The heaters are all still active.

A few minutes ago I ran a print until it froze. Then I sent a command through the LCD to change the z-axis by 0.1 mm, then the steppers briefly resumed the print but at a slow speed. When I try to repeat this, the printer crashes and the LCD becomes unresponsive.

Other people with similar problems have tried the following:

Make sure your baudrate is set correctly
It is

Also make sure it's set correctly in your EEPROM
It is

Run prints off of the SD card
I exclusively print from the SD card

Make sure your power settings aren't allowing Windows to put USB devices to sleep to save power
Shouldn't really solve my problem but I did it anyways.

Your board may be overheating
I pulled the back panel and have a fan blowing across it, sort of at an angle.

It could be a ground loop problem, make sure your computer and your printer are running off of the same power source or as closely as possible in your electrical network
Now connected to the same power strip.

Use a USB cable with ferrite beads to avoid crosstalk during printing
Just ordered one off Amazon.

Something about usbcore.cpp and variant.cpp
Not sure what this is referring to... my friend helped me flash the new firmware, I'm not familiar with the setup process

Can anyone help me troubleshoot this?

I can add whatever details/ logs might help. thanks

EDIT: whenever it freezes like this, there's a Buffer of 1 shown on the screen. I think it might be stuck trying to execute some Gcode? Not sure

EDIT2: I'm using Slic3r

Re: Da Vinci 1.0 on Repetier randomly stops mid print... troubleshooting?

Did your printer have a history of NOT doing this prior to Repetier?  Or did you flash out of the box?

Have you made sure the power supply is getting plenty of cooling as well?  They can also overheat.

I'm not sure if Repetier host can show the G-codes being executed, but Octoprint does by default.

Check to see what command is trying to be executed when it freezes.  (Keep a log) Post what you discover, even if there appears to be no pattern in the last G-code executed.

Additionally, you can manually edit in @info and/or @pause commands (Bottom of page) to your g-code to try things like pausing every dozen layers or so to see if some cooling time prevents the issue.  (These wouldn't be fixes, but they will provide info on what is causing the issues.)

Thanks for the response!

I only ran about a minute and a half of a calibration print before I bought it (used) to made sure it ran. Then, I immediately upgraded to sort of immerse myself in the technical details of 3D printing, but in retrospect I should've definitely gotten a baseline on the stock firmware.

I haven't, no, that's a good idea. I actually just picked up an IR temperature sensor, when I get home from campus I'm going to check the operating temps of the motors, the PS, the extruder and the bed.

Will do, I've been monitoring the G-code and haven't been getting any glaring errors (outside of the printer not recognizing extruder fan commands) but I'll start logging.

Okay, thanks.

Will update later today or tomorrow.

Re: Da Vinci 1.0 on Repetier randomly stops mid print... troubleshooting?

Power supply is okay. Servos aren't overheating. I gave the wiring bundles a tug to make sure there was sufficient slack. No crimps in the wires.

Just reran an SD print that failed in the past, it failed again. I checked temps and tension in the wiring here again immediately after print failure, but all seems well.

Reinstalled Repetier Host.

Only error logged from Gcode:
"Unknown command:M106   S237"

Trying one directly through my laptop's USB to see if that completes without errors, seeing as I've only used the SD print option.

Re: Da Vinci 1.0 on Repetier randomly stops mid print... troubleshooting?

1- Have you tried to completely unplug the USB cable ?
2- Does the problem occur on different gcode / models ?
3- I could compile you a gcode using Simplify3D if you'd like to try.

1- yes, having the USB totally unplugged does not help.

2- Yes, it occurs on any/ every model. It could be a problem with my Slic3r settings

3- That would be awesome, if you have anything that's like roughly a ~1 hour job and compiled it, that would be perfect.

Discovered last night that running the print job directly through the USB cable (not uploading to the SD) seems somewhat more reliable, but the problem still exists.

Re: Da Vinci 1.0 on Repetier randomly stops mid print... troubleshooting?

While its most likely something else, could there be an issue with the SD card?

DaVinci 1.0A with Repetier .92
Simplify 3D
E3DV6

3- I am not sure if I can upload a file in here. Send me your email in private message and I will send you a gcode.

4- https://www.simplify3d.com/support/prin … e-of-print

5- mpoffo could have pointed a good check. The extension, the plug, possible interference, the card... I use a cheap eBay extension myself and it works good.

Re: Da Vinci 1.0 on Repetier randomly stops mid print... troubleshooting?

I have the same set up.
I have about 800 hours on the printer never an issue.
I started using S3D first 7 hour print Perfect!!!
tried to print 4 small items failed 5 times???
Resliced with just one of the items prints fine 1.2 hr print
Tried to repeat same print failed half way into print....
No updates to firmware or repiter host in the last 3 months
Only viable option is the mother board is overheating on the verge of failure.

Okay, thank you. I will PM my email.

In other news, I reflashed Repetier. I made it about 2 hours into a 2h40m long print and it froze again.

This time, the last unknown command was M106 S137.

Might try reflashing with Arduino 1.6.5 and see if that has any effect. About to swap my SD tomorrow as well.

If it is the motherboard overheating, I'm not sure how to check for that. I honestly need a weekend free to troubleshoot it entirely, in the meantime bumping for any new random suggestions

Get a fan and set it so it blows straight on the motherboard... If the prints gets further then it is a heat problem and you should consider installing one or more fans around/over the mainboard.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

Re: Da Vinci 1.0 on Repetier randomly stops mid print... troubleshooting?

Prints ending prematurely are the result of a cheap USB cable.  I had this issue and I changed my USB cable to a quality Belkin cable.  Haven't had this issue again since changing cables.  smile

Re: Da Vinci 1.0 on Repetier randomly stops mid print... troubleshooting?

Long-standing issue in the 0.92 davinci port, see https://github.com/luc-github/Repetier- … /issues/38 for some possible tips to help.

The 0.92.6 Repetier code has fix for this on Due boards, and luc is syncing his tree in a new branch, but it apparently isn't ready yet.

Re: Da Vinci 1.0 on Repetier randomly stops mid print... troubleshooting?

I'm experiencing a similar issue to what was posted here, My printer is a DaVinci 1.0A  flashed repetier firmware 0.92 with arduino 1.5.8.  The problem is similar to the one described in the original post, printer runs for a time and then stops with a single item in buffer. The printer does not appear to be frozen as the menus can be navigated. I have used this printer with the original xyz firmware for a number of prints and those did not have any issues. Looking at the description for issue 38, the bug described does not quite match, in my case the buffer stops at 1 item and the printer never resumes. I looked through the g-code from the log and no obvious errors present themselves. I have two basic questions:
1) Has any resolution for this problem been found or suggested?
2) If not, is there a way to read the command in the buffer directly?
Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

1. I have not found a hard/fast solution with explanation of why this occurs, though I am about to read into issue 38 above.

It sounds like we ran into the exact same problem, by the way. My only fix was reflashing to stock firmware, at which point I never experienced this error again, ruling out any hardware faults-- unless there's some kind of weird, atypical interaction between the printer's electronics and Repetier that the firmware can't figure out.

After being satisfied that my printer can indeed print (and enjoying some ~95 hours of printing trouble free) I'm again interested in working with Repetier.

I'm going to try 0.92.6 and will report back after this weekend

Re: Da Vinci 1.0 on Repetier randomly stops mid print... troubleshooting?

Hi there!

I've been chasing the same error since a while, I had the same issues with stock firmware and also Repetier host. It turns out that the reason was a loose contact on the hardware.

Please refer to my other post here in this forum for more details: http://www.soliforum.com/post/118358/#p118358

Take care!
