Topic: Kossel Mini Modifcation

Hello I will be purchasing a Kossel  mini in October and I have a question  about the Kossel and the the limitations of delta printers. If any one has a Kossel mini what stops you from modifying it? How hard is it to make the printers z axis taller or to make the bed and print space larger? What are the limitations on the size delta printers?

Re: Kossel Mini Modifcation

A question I have pondered myself over and over. From what I have seen the delta design is quite scalable. You can gain some z by shortening the arms or gain some xy by making them longer. The trade off is  if you make the z large the xy gets smaller and visa versa. in reality if you want a bigger envelope you need longer frame parts and longer arms and longer belts. and in some cases longer linear slides.
IMHO if you get the 2020 and use 1 meter pieces for the verticals and 500mm pcs for the sides you will get a nice size print area I have not done the math.
I will say that kit is tempting.

looking at the specs  i see a couple major shortcomings.    Power supply is too small . No heat bed. Ships direct from china soo take your chances on customer support. hot and max 280 should do most materials.

A common problem with these kits in general is the plastic connectors are generally of low quality. Not uncommon for folks who buy these kits to have to print there own . A problem if this is your first printer.

I think if I did a kossel I would spend the extra $ 100 and source aluminum corners effector and carriages.

Take a look at this one. Ships from USA , aluminum corner connectors ,heat bed included, 300 watt power supply only downside is LCD controler is a $12 add on.

I suggest you download the build instructions and read them before you buy any kit.

Re: Kossel Mini Modifcation

The power supply that shipped with my FT Kossel kit was not sufficient or bad. Whrn the bed was on the hot end could not heat above 160. Tutn the bed off and it would heat to desired temp. I have bought a 75 amp replacement. I just need to finish the wiring and spring loaded bed mounting to make adjusting easier.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

Re: Kossel Mini Modifcation

I've just finished a FT Kossel build , and did modify the specs somewhat as I went - lengthened the rods to 255mm center-to-center, and raised the mounting point a bit for the linear rails, ended up with about 190mm diameter and similar height build area.

Although there are some weaknesses in that kit (Z-probe awfulness for one, I have settled on a slightly modified "Snow effector" from http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:868258) I didn't encounter many of the issues others have had, yet - knock on wood!

Using the original z-probe's microswitch on that Snow effector is working nicely. My additions were a screwed-on washer below the lever arm to prevent sagging, and a compression spring overlapping it on top to ensure prompt return to level.

Overall, two co-workers and I have had pretty good experiences with this kit (one had a mismatched CF rod in the kit but there was enough correct sized rods to build anyway).

Must be nice, my kit was the third one they made and I had to cut my own rods. Thanks to me you now have 10mm screws to mount all the plastic now instead of 6mm like I got. I advised them the 6mm was too short to mount the Acrylic parts.

Thank you Carl!

We still had to cut our CF rods, though. 6mm screws would've been crazy (nearly said "nuts", but that would be confusing ;-) )!

Ours were all Rev B kits, bought about a month ago.

Re: Kossel Mini Modifcation

I'm on a budget so I don't want to spend a lot. The first Kossel mini is cheaper and I can easily modify it. How weak is the power supply?

Re: Kossel Mini Modifcation

It may be ok, mine may have just been bad. All I can say is try it. A new power supply will run you about $40 on Ebay.

Re: Kossel Mini Modifcation

I'm not very knowledgeable with the Kossel printers since I do not own one, but I don;t see what would stop you from adding height.
1) Taller frame
2) Spectra fishing line (because why bother buying belts?)
3) Adjusted firmware

I would think this is all that is needed.....

Printit Mason and Printit Horizon printers
Multiple SD2s- Bulldog XL, E3D v5/v6/Lite6, Volcano, Hobb Goblin, Titan, .9 motor, Lawsy carriages, direct Y drive, fishing line...the list goes on
Filawinder and Filastruder #1870.....worth every penny!

Re: Kossel Mini Modifcation

If it is just more height then just make the slides if equipped longer or make the uprights longer if using rollers. For more width you need additional height as well.

Most of the mini kossel have a height of 180mm so they pretty much have the same height as most other printers. The can only do about 110 on the X and Y though.

or you can buy this one for under $25... I have been using one of these for months with no problems on my 1st SD4

and for the record, cheaper does not = better...
we purchased a cheaper kossel kit and it has been a nightmare to assemble, from bad plastics to lousy instructions to crappy hardware. it is cheaper for a reason - usually sacrificing quality. Unless you have a way to print the needed plastic parts, are very mechanically inclined, and have done this sort of thing before, I would go with the proven decent kit (ie: Folgertech)

SD4 #1 & #2 - Lawsy carriages, E3D v6, Rumba controller board, mirror bed plate, X motor fan, upgraded PSU & Mica bed heater
SD4 #3 - in the works ~ Folgertech FT-5, rev 1
Printit Industries Beta Tester - Horizon H1

Re: Kossel Mini Modifcation

I bought a Kossel Delta (Rev A) from Folgertech   and it's going together pretty good nothing really major or show stopping... I am having a small issue with the head staying the same level as the bed... carl_m1968 gave me a good starting point.... Over all for my first build, it's going good...  BTW Folgertech customer support is good IMHO
